The games are set to end tomorrow (most likely). It is a very sad time indeed. I have enjoyed being your captain more than you will know. This challenge, our conversation, all the books read, and especially my beloved spreadsheet have given me nothing but joy. I'm sure I will interact with you all again in various other challenges :)

NEW GOAL
Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as north-america - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable

I'm not enjoying The Nightingale AT ALL. I don't know why... Historical Fiction is my favorite genre and it's just not catching me...

Chapters 12 – 16
Q13. Vianne helped make the list of teachers which took Rachel and other Jewish teachers. She went to Captain Beck about the list, which she thought the names were meant to be “clerical in nature”. She also saw all the food and items the Nazi’s had. What are your thoughts about this scene? Was she naïve? Do you think she is starting to understand there severity of the situation? Is she seeing more of what Isabelle is talking about?
I think Vianne is deeply drowning in denial. She knew what that list would do. She is not ignorant. But she is so desperate for Antoine to return and everything to go back to normal, she is grasping onto straws.
Q14. Isabelle has been distributing tracts for months and she stole the bicycle. Is her behavior being more reckless? Do you think she will be caught for these kinds of behavior? Will she be caught with this new mission in Paris delivering secret messages for the Free French?
Isabelle's behavior has ALWAYS been reckless. She is immature. She has never cared about the consequences of her behaviors, because she doesn't care what happens to her. She doesn't realize that her behaviors effect others. Something is bound to happen to her that will not only jeopardize the Free French, but also Vianne and Sophie.
Q15. Do you like the timeline changes (In France, then in Oregon)?
I don't really care that much, to be honest.
Q16. Now with Isabelle in Paris, Captain Beck is alone with Vianne and Sophie. What do you think will happen with Vianne and Sophie?
Nothing good. Something is going to happen between Vianne and Beck, either consensual or not.
Q17. Should Isabelle reopen the bookshop?
Q18. Which character do you like more, Isabelle or Vianne? Which of the two sisters do you feel the saddest for?
I like and sympathize with Vianne. She is so worried about her child and her husband. She is the responsible one. She has a Nazi living in her house. She is terrified. I do not like Isabelle. AT ALL.

Chapters 8-11
8. Have you read much about the occupation of France? Has any of the historical information (such as German officers billeting in houses) surprised you?
I am only just starting to read more about the German occupation in France, mainly because of how amazing All the Light We Cannot See was. None of the historical information surprises me.
9.I was so annoyed with Isabelle in this section for being so naive and immature that I almost stopped reading the book. As a parent, I became so angry on Vianne's behalf about Isabelle continually putting Sophie at risk. What are your thoughts on Isabelle? Is her hurt and resentment towards Vianne justified? Is she doing the right thing helping the resistance?
Oh my goodness, I feel the SAME WAY!!! I will be very honest, I am pretty underwhelmed with this book so far (and I'm almost 50% finished with it). I do not like Isabelle. I don't think her resentment towards Vianne is justified at all. Vianne is not her mother, and should have never been expected to take on that roll. I do think it is commendable, her desire and attempts to help the resistance, but at the expense of her sister and niece's safety -- not so much.
10. Captain Beck has, so far, tried to be very accommodating and polite. Was he just trying to win their trust to be able to use Vianne? Or is he just a decent man dragged into a war with no choices?
Eeeeeeeeh......... I mean.......... He DID use Vianne. I don't believe for a second that she truly had no idea what that list of names would do. Deep down, she knew. That entire situation makes me nervous and uncomfortable.......
11. Captain Beck does some research and says the men have been captured and are "not coming home". Do you believe him?
Nope.
12. Some of the women started to turn on Vianne, insinuating that she may be 'in bed' with the Germans. Do you think this was fair?
Vianne is in a no-win situation. She has been cooperating because she has no choice. She is protecting her daughter. However, there is a connection between Vianne and Beck that is undeniable...
