38631 Don't put too much stock in the author's representation of the panhandle. He leaves out the importance of the cattle industry not just for this area but for the world, and he doesn't give enough credit to the farmers and people who survived the dust bowl. However, this is one of the few books that looks at the panhandle in it's contemporary state. It's one of the first, if not totally accurate, looks at the effects of the hog industry in the area, and it is as good as summary of the Optima Dam as published anywhere else. The title is an insult since there are places in the US more remote and less settled than the panhandle. Unfortunately, the author didn't look at the panhandle for it's positive qualities.
