Gentlemen, this is the discussion for the chapter "Gentlemen We Begin" of Mansfield's Book of Manly Men, by Stephen Mansfield. Post your thoughts or questions below, and enjoy!

I'm currently reading this book in conjunction with the Tribe 6-month discipleship program from Pursuit of Manliness, which has reading scheduled as 1 chapter per week. So that I'm not reading ahead too far and then having to backtrack, I'm going to reschedule the way we're doing this book. Once this is over, I'll return to 35 pages-per-week format. Thank you.

I just grabbed an image off Google to use as the group profile image so that it wasn't blank. If any of you are into graphics or creative enough to come up with a profile image or masthead (think FB cover photo) for us to use, I'd certainly appreciate it. I can't find specifics on the profile photo, but the masthead is 970 x 245 pixels. Thank you!

I guess I'll start things off!
I'm Greg. I'm originally from a small blue collar farming community in the Mid-Ohio Valley, but I've spent most of the last 21 years in the Carolinas. I'm a former Marine, a single father of a 17 year old girl, and an aspiring Strongman (see the part about me raising a teenage daughter).
I don't want to bore you with my story, so I'll wait and see how much everyone else decides to share, then maybe I'll come back and add to mine.

Good morning, men. I thought it would be nice to get to know everyone as they join our group, so please tell us a little bit about yourself!

Greetings, men, and thank you for your interest in the group. The reason I created it is because, when I'm reading, I'm not always sure I'm 'getting it'. By reading it and discussing it together with other men, I hope that we're all able to get more out of it than we would by reading on our own.
We're all busy with families, careers and/or obligations and finding time to sit down and read - even when we want to - can be difficult, but sure *any* man has the fortitude to carve out 5-10 minutes a day to read 5 pages. That's all I'm asking of you as part of this group. We will break books up into chunks of 35 pages and discuss each progressive section weekly.
I will create a new discussion board for each book (going forward we can vote on 'next reads'), and each week I (or an admin) will create a new post with that week's date and page range for discussion of that chunk.
This is just to get us started, nothing is set in stone. If you have suggestions, please voice them.
I thought we could go by chapters, but while some chapters can be extremely short, others could be excruciatingly long (which might be difficult to complete within a week). Then there are books with small, but numerous chapters, and if we're doing one a week, then we might only complete one book in a year. So I think by starting out with a focus on pages we could cover more content.
Again, I welcome and thank you.

This will be the first book for discussion in 2018, as well as the first for this group. There are 272 pages, so we'll allocate (a little over) 8 weeks to read and digest the material, starting on 1 January 2018 and finishing up 28 February 2018. I hope you all enjoy!
