Hi Jennifer, thank you for reading the story and for the kind words. This is indeed a moment of insight from the distant past into Enderl's youth - he's already in his fifties by the time the main series starts up, and, how should I put it, a divisive figure when you meet him.

However, I'm glad to say that the series does not focus on grim and brutal characters like this; one of the POV's starts off in a dark place, but the other five are people you can root for without qualms. Don't be put off the books for fear that you'd be in for a grimdark slog!

A few chapters of Book 1 will give you a much better sense of the series in relation to this short story than anything I could write here, so I encourage you to read the free sample on the Amazon book page if you're curious.
