52537 Thanks Kirsty x
I've been looking through my books today and started compiling my list ... I'll put it up in the next few days :-)

52537 I'll start compiling my new list over the weekend :) ... Nice to have our little group still going and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's lists x

52537 Finally read The Yellow Wallpaper and Turn of the Screw both classic gothic tales. The Yellow Wallpaper is a short tale about a woman's descent into madness.

I enjoyed both this and Turn of The Screw ... although maybe I enjoyed the plot of Turn of the Screw moreso than the dialogue - which can be a bit exhausting. The story is left quite open-ended and you never really know if the ghosts at Bly were really there or a symptom of the Nanny's hallucinations. Florence and Giles (that we read as a group last year)is based on this Victorian story. Not exactly the same but very similar and I have to say I found Florence and Giles the more scary tale of the two.

52537 I started this a couple of weeks ago, but then got side-tracked by another work. I seem to be a bit hyperactive with my reading and get distracted too easily. I do want to get back to this one soon though.

52537 Consumed: How Shopping Fed the Class System. Harry Wallop Can't put this one down! It's amazingly well researched ...and amusingly written too. Fascinating. The different class tribes discussed in the book such as the Wood Burning Stovers, The Hyphen-Leighs and Portland Privateers are so accurately drawn. So much interesting history here too.
52537 I downloaded it some weeks ago for 20p ... will start it this week. I was a bit put off at first as a colleague of mine was reading and hated it although she carried on to the end but said it was too far-fetched ... anyway I might really like it! there's great reviews from others, so I'm happy to give it a go :)

52537 Hi Abi :) Nice to have you with us x
52537 The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

How To Be a Good Wife by Emma Chapman

The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas

The Bell Jar is a book that I've always felt I should read, but never got round to. Just downloaded it on to the Kindle today.
How To Be A Good Wife is a relatively short thriller .... started this one already, but I've got a few on the go. Looks interesting!
Really liking the sound of The End of Mr Y, Scarlett Thomas is a very talented writer ... I've downloaded this one too and enjoyed the sample.

52537 Yep I think a bi-monthly group read might work better then more of us could commit to it. I would hate to see the group die, it was going so well earlier last year, and I have missed it.

Although I voted to keep the group private originally, that doesn't seem to be working .... maybe we should test the waters and make it public, just to see how we get on.

52537 Can't wait for it Jo :) not been this excited for a long time. Got the delivery charge back from Amazon, just seen the refund email. Just wish they'd choose more reliable couriers.

Has anyone bought the powerfast adapter to charge from the wall? I've ordered a generic wall charger from ebay that's suitable for the Fire, just hope it will be ok. I just don't want to get the laptop out to charge it every time. x

52537 Thanks guys, can't wait for it to arrive now ... ordered the Fire HD. I paid for guaranteed delivery today as I knew someone would be in, but the courier has gone awol with it :( .... Amazon said that it might be Thursday now. Hope it turns up soon.

Opted for the HD in the end as the speakers are Dolby audio and the sound quality with headphones in or out is supposed to be really good and I hope to put spotify on there. Also the storage for the HD is pretty good, I went for the 16GB bit could have paid £30 more for 32GB. Feel a bit deflated now, was looking forward to having a play with it this weekend. x

52537 Finally thinking of putting some Christmas money towards a kindle. I'd like to have one that shows coloured images/book covers. I think maybe it's worth me getting the Fire as then I can access the internet and maybe my course website and read my module material off it, like I can on the kindle app on my phone.

With the Fire can you access all websites like with a tablet or just downloaded apps? Bit confused. Any advice appreciated x

52537 Got to see the film a few days ago, it's wonderful! So impressed with the visuals. It kept very close to the book too, there was just one little bit of romance that Pi has with a dancing girl in Pondicherri that I didn't remember being in the book ... everything else was the same. I thought the story would be unfilmable! Amazed that they managed to pull it off and in such a beautiful way. Even the meerkat island was exactly how I imagined it would be.

Go see it!

52537 Possession - always had this on my to-read list. Think I'll download it now :)
Oct 17, 2012 12:22PM

52537 The cover for Possession isn't showing ... only shows the name when you hover the mouse over it. x

52537 I've recently downloaded The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton this was one of our nominations for the Australasia read ... it looks just up my alley.

Oh and also this one We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson which is a bit of a gothic classic and it's been on my to-read list for ages. Hope to get round to them soon.

52537 I've started to read books on the Kindle app on my phone ... it's fine until I can afford a proper kindle. I thought I'd find it too small, but nope been really happy with it - will I want to go back to books now is the question.
At the moment I'm reading The Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein as heard so many good things from you guys about this one ... and it's quite intriguing so far.
I've also got this one on my app which I keep delving into Moranthology by Caitlin Moran as I just love her writing, and as it's a collection of her articles for The Times, I can pick up and put down whenever and read other stuff inbetween. It's not quite as funny as How To Be A Woman, but still an enjoyable read.

52537 Agreed. I have a few that I never got round to, I might opt for Gillespie and I :)
