527 Great space station read: In the Company of Others.

Space travel, a lot of fun, gave me many laughs, with a fast moving plot and superb characters: The Myriad and sequels by R.M. Meluch. Her work is VASTLY underappreciated, IMHO.

I also recommend SF by Sarah Zettel, Playing God or The Quiet Invasion both had interesting takes on other worlds and spacecraft.

Based on Rothfuss, might look at
Song of the Beast by Carol Berg. Also a bard, a standalone, (so you can see if you like this author,) very deep characterization and nice twists to the plot line. Also if you have not read works by Guy Gavriel Kay.

Based on your second two, if you have not read anything (yet) by David Gemmell - (like Painted Man, this author has very action oriented heroes)

For magical systems/good characters, look at The Barbed Coil - also standalone.

The only book I know about a rock cult/apocalyptic event was George RR Martin's The Armageddon Rag...

That book, and its sequel in particular - awesome!
Nice to see you appreciating this writer, she's done some wonderful books.

527 Redbeard, after a careful review of your list, seriously, check out David Gemmell. His series books sometimes stand alone, aren't massively deep, read well, and he has a good sense of the heroic.

For the most bent look at an Arthurian, ever, tryDragon Lord by David Drake.

527 I'd add:

Sarah Zettel and Carol Berg - if you liked Marillier, McKillip, Bujold, on those lines, these two are worth a look.

And Terri Windling if you like the mythic, placed in a modern setting.
