61972 I could not agree more, Linda. I indipendently published three novels before I got my first contract. I won a national and state award for my work, and got some really good reviews. This, I am sure, is what got me that serious consideration that landed a contract...and has gotten me two more national awards, which will get me a better contract next time... climbing the ladder is dependent on the quality and marketability of your work (More often than not, more the latter than the former, which is rather sad)

I agree with Linda very much: publishing, whether e-pub, self-pub, or sending a manuscript to a publisher, should all be at the same benchmark of quality. If you do any less you are doing yourself a disservice. You won't build a fan base if your work is any less than your absolute best. I suggest a group of beta readers to weed out these problems, and an editor (someone not a friend) who will give you honest input.
