Newspapers have lost their relevance for most book authors. They've cut back or eliminated their book review sections. Many now use syndicated content from the New York Times or Washington Post (which are not known to review books from unknown authors).

Press releases to targeted magazines, on the other hand, is still a very viable way to get noticed.

The most effective method of building a reader base is to create relationships with other blogs and websites that already serve your targeted reader - in this case, readers of science fiction.

To create a relationship, offer that site or blog some great content: a book for review, a book excerpt, an interview with you, a guest blog post, a podcast, etc.

Focus on high-traffic, highly targeted blogs and websites.
