50x66 It seemed to emphazise the stark differences between what happens at the Capitol versus some districts. It also made me realize how helpless the tributes are - the are powerless and that fact is emphasized as the books go on.
I can see similarities in today's culture - unfortunately. Cover models/celebrities made up and airbrushed to be something they aren't.

50x66 When you put it like that, the opinion people have that things are "getting worse" is sort of ridiculous. Over the last 500 years violence has gone down....kings, queens, other notable figures are no longer beheaded or burned at the stake, no forced slavery, etc. I think you're right - we are totally connected via the internet and the 24 hour media which HAS to find something to talk about.

50x66 I hadn't ever heard of the series before, but I went to Breaking Dawn with my 18 year old niece and there was a trailer for the Hunger Games movie. She was excited because she was excited for the movie to come out. I remember saying VERY strongly that there was no way I would ever see a movie like that or read a book like that! I just couldn't bring myself to do that and didn't think I would enjoy such a horrific plot. Well, fast forward 6 months and never say never!

50x66 I think kids do respond differently - although maybe I shouldn't only single out "kids". I think a book like Hunger Games will draw lots of different emotions and focuses. Some will focus on the relationship between Katniss and her "boys", some on the bigger picture of problems with a society like that, some will read it just for the action - hoping for some good fighting. I have a "mom" friend who said if she had a 13 year old daughter, she wouldn't let her read it. I guess, I don't really agree with that....generally, books that get people reading and talking are a good thing.

50x66 Hi - I'm Deb. I just finished reading the first book last week and hope to get my hands on the other 2 in a couple weeks. I hadn't heard of this series until I saw the trailer for the movie. I was really put off by it at first - being a mom, I didn't like the idea of kids killing kids. I thought that was the entire focus of the books/movie and figured it would be overly gorey. However, after reading the first book I was immediately drawn in by the whole "process" of the long standing tradition of it all and what it represented in society. Now I'm excited to keep reading!
