On Wednesday, March 8, 2017, the ten finalists of the 12th year of the Anasoft litera literary award were announced live on Rádio Devín. The judging panel was choosing out of historically the largest amount of automatically nominated titles. The books that got in truly surprised.

The professional panel was choosing out of 227 titles. It is the highest number of Slovak prosaic books the panel of the Anasoft litera prize has evaluated so far. Finally, the judging panel consisting of Veronika Rácová, Ivana Hostová, Ján Gavura, Michal Habaj and Pavel Matejovič selected the following ten titles in alphabetical order:

“Despite the large number of books evaluated, the choice of the final ten was not a simple one whatsoever. When deciding, the quality of the text itself was of greater importance than the author’s name. Also, it turned out that a well-written genre literature can be more compelling than a not-so-well managed attempt for an artistic text, though with higher ambitions. The publishing of some books seemed to be hasty and they would need more precise authorial and editorial work,” the judging panel of Anasoft litera 2017 noted with regard to their selection of this year.

Out of the finalists of Anasoft litera, this year, half of the writers have been nominated for the first time, the other half consists of multiple finalists of the previous years and there is even one winner of the prize.

The jury deciding about the finalists and the winner of the 11th annual literary prize is composed of: literary theoreticians Zuzana Bariaková, Marta Součková and Radoslav Passia, translator Stanislav Vallo, and Petr Minařík, a publisher from Czech Republic.

The annual literary prize Anasoft litera is being awarded for the best original Slovak fiction work or for the translation of the original fiction work of authors, who are the citizens of Slovak Republic and their works or the translations of their works to Slovak language are published in the previous year.

The evaluation of selected works is arranged in two rounds. In the second round, only the ten best titles from all published books are being considered.

“As in the previous year, we had to cope with the growth in quantity in prosaic production which unfortunately isn’t directly proportional to the quality of the texts” concluded the members of the jury. “In this year’s top ten the notorious and (proved) names of Slovak prevail, with complete absence of the youngest generation. As the general trend seems greater consideration for the demands of the reader manifested in both thematic and formal aspect. Writers’ focus shifts from short stories to novel and it’s more or less decomposed forms. A significant amount of works thematise intimate or family history, some of the texts react to actual socio-political situation or significant events of modern or elder history. Texts utilise various genres and work with both realistic narrative and more experimental, hybrid approaches. However, the works of the established authors presented a prevailing tendency towards and replication or variation of proven approaches."

The winner, who receives 10 000 eur prize, will be announced after the second round in September 2016. The final prize will be awarded by the general partner of the literary prize, the software corporation Anasoft. The public can participate in online voting which would decide about the winner of the “Readers’ Anasoft litera prize 2016”.

The best ten titles will be presented on the literary festival Anasoft litera fest, which will be held from 25th to 30th April in Bratislava. Besides readings, discussions and workshops the festival will also offer strong musical programme - Czech industrial-folk musician Kittchen, Slovak artists Herzog Herzog and Genius Locci. VENI ensemble with Daniel Matej will premiere two pieces: MORSeARIA (miserere) dedicated to the memory of Juraj Kušnierik, and JMF for DM, other part of the programme is an exhibition of book illustration in Slovak prose.

In the ten year’s history of the prize the was awarded to Marek Vadas, Milan Zelinka, Alta Vášová, Stanislav Rakús, Monika Kompaníková, Balla, Víťo Staviarsky, Veronika Šikulová a two times Pavel Vilikovský.

Veronika Šikulová has won Slovakia’s most significant literary prize Anasoft litera for her novel Medzerový plod. “Veronika Šikulová’s prose is a mature literary work marked by extraordinary vitality and lyricism. The author presents an unsentimental story of the quiet passing of a loved one. Veronika Šikulová has demonstrated a superb verbal mastery. Her story is filled with sensitivity to seemingly simple things in life, a sensitivity that reaches deep into contemporary awareness.”

This year’s jury composed of translator and literary scholar Adam Bžoch, philosopher Marek Debnár, poet and translator Valerij Kupka and literary scholars Zora Prušková and Ivana Taranenková evaluated 188 books and nominated these titles in alphabetical order:

The literary prize Anasoft litera has been awarded yearly since 2006 to the best original Slovak work of fiction or translated work of fiction written by a Slovak author, published in the preceding year. The Anasoft litera 2015 winner Veronika Šikulová recieved the prize money amounting to 10,000 euros awarded by the exclusive partner and sponsor of the prize, the software company ANASOFT. During the 10-year history the prize was awarded to: Marek Vadas, Milan Zelinka, Alta Vášová, Stanislav Rakús, Monika Kompaníková, Balla, Víťo Staviarsky and twice to Pavel Vilikovský.

Angelus 2014 Winner and Natalya Gorbanevskaya Award Winner is Pavol Rankov for his prose „Stalo sa prvého septembra (alebo inokedy)”, translated by Tomasz Grabiński as „Zdarzyło się pierwszego września (albo kiedy indziej)” and published by Książkowe Klimaty.

The ANGELUS Central European Literature Award (the most important award in the field of creative prose translated into the Polish language) is directly connected with the centuries long tradition of Wroclaw as a city of meetings and dialogue.

The winner of Anasoft litera 2014 will be announced publicly on September 2014. The winner's fee amounting to 10,000 euros is granted by the exclusive partner and sponsor of the prize, the software company Anasoft.
The top ten books will be introduced during the literary festival Anasoft litera fest taking place between May 12-17, 2014 in Bratislava. Author readings will be accompanied by concerts, discussions, film screenings, theatre performances and events for high school students.
During its 9-year history, 53 writers have become finalists of the literary prize Anasoft litera.

Winner of literary prize Anasoft litera 2012 is Balla!
The following committee members chose 10 finalists of the literary prize Anasoft litera: Tomasz Grabiński, translator, Gabriela Magová, literary scholar, Vladimír Petrík, literary scholar, Michal Rehúš, poet and literary critic, and Ivan Štrpka, poet.
“Finally somebody in today’s Slovakia has made a cross over himself even if with the great deal of distance, annoyance and sarcastic boredom over what is absorbed as a possibility of life by a man of our reality,“ assesses Ivan Štrpka the winning prose In the Name of the Father and continues. “In this book Balla is also a realist, who does not smile. He is one of a few authors who thoroughly possess style.” According to Gabriela Magová “Balla’s text was high above at first sight more ambitious works of prose simply by being a master piece in all aspects.” Michal Rehúš agrees with her and adds that “Balla’s novelette is a formally and stylistically polished text which joins a sense of postmodern playfulness with the reflexion to more serious human questions. By using fragmental narration, literary mystification and the use of motives from the field of mythology the text deals with disrupted family relationships, death of a close person as well as with the meaning of human existence.”
