The use of 'crutch' to suggest a hobbled experience is a dull cliche that should be dispensed with, not least for the reasons you enumerate.
Biographies, footnotes, literary analysis, pictures, music and more are deepening my reading of Swann's Way.
To suggest otherwise is a particular aesthetic choice. No more.

For those on Twitter, I'll also be tweeting ISoLT painting references with the hashtag #ProustPics

Would it be too awkward/unmanageable to spilt the month of October into three lots of reading weeks, each lasting ten days, in order to read each part straight through?

I have never read Madame Bovary in any form but a flip through my spanking brand new copy of Davis' translation looks too delicious for words. So looking forward to October.

Debussy aside, these are not composers/performers that I'm personally familiar with so anyone is welcome to nominate any superior performances and -Spotify allowing- I'll add them to the playlist.
