75460 A very good challenge Valerie.
The use of 'crutch' to suggest a hobbled experience is a dull cliche that should be dispensed with, not least for the reasons you enumerate.
Biographies, footnotes, literary analysis, pictures, music and more are deepening my reading of Swann's Way.
To suggest otherwise is a particular aesthetic choice. No more.

75460 No problem Rima. It's great fun.

75460 Following the good suggestion of our host, when a painting is referenced by Proust, I'll note in this discussion thread the relevant page of both the Karpeles and my reading edition of Proust [currently the Penguin Classics edition of Lydia Davis' translation].

For those on Twitter, I'll also be tweeting ISoLT painting references with the hashtag #ProustPics
75460 Oui!
75460 The Penguin Classics edition that I have is split into three parts:

Part 1 [pages 1 to 58]
Part 2 [pages 61 to 2o2]
Part 3 [pages 2o5 to 311]

Would it be too awkward/unmanageable to spilt the month of October into three lots of reading weeks, each lasting ten days, in order to read each part straight through?
75460 I'm certainly OK with a comfortable month.
75460 I'd love to be part of this.
I have never read Madame Bovary in any form but a flip through my spanking brand new copy of Davis' translation looks too delicious for words. So looking forward to October.

75460 As a mood setter, I've thrown together a Spotify playlist based on the pieces referenced in the Alex Ross article Moira linked to: http://open.spotify.com/user/12309454...
Debussy aside, these are not composers/performers that I'm personally familiar with so anyone is welcome to nominate any superior performances and -Spotify allowing- I'll add them to the playlist.
