85761 Stellar suggestions. Come poll time I'll make sure to include a blurb with the title so each has a fair shot at sparking interest.

85761 Hey! So, what do you want to read? Let's keep it to three suggestions per person, then by Saturday, the 15th (it's short notice, I know!) I'll round-up all the suggestions and I'll make a poll. First and second winners will be our January Read* and the alternative [in the event you already read the first].

It can be any genre and about anything - but if you want to make a case for reading a short discourse on gender studies because its relevant to the only topic presently in the listserv, then go for it. /justsaying!

I bought the Humble Ebook Bundle and I haven't broken it in yet, so my suggestions for January are kind of arbitrary - the circumstance is that they're already on my phone and just collecting virtual dust.

1. Pirate Cinema by Cory Doctorow. It's available CC on the web for those with libraries that don't have or can't ILL a copy.

2. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Suzanna Clarke

3. Old Man's War by John Scalzi

* re "January Read:" I welcome catchier alternatives!

85761 Does anyone want to take a crack at a suggestion for our first January read? I'll pull the nominations and make a poll. I'll throw out a suggestion wheeeen I'm no doing it from a phone ;-)

85761 I pretty much do / look at / watch / or read anything Xeni and Cory Doctorow tell me to. HOMELAND is due out in February and there's always a CC text file of the book available.

85761 Are any of you motivated or interested in co-moderating this group? I prefer an ad-hocracy like in Cory Doctorow's Down & Out in the Magic Kingdom, so I'm happy to let the technical power proliferate to better facilitate political bribery with whuffie.

85761 Good morning everyone,

I was at awe to see how many jumped in on this over night. As you can see, we don't have any rules or focus - but that can change if you want it to. What kind of readers are we? We, like the SciFi and Fantasy group Sword & Laser, might opt to select and talk about a primary / alternative book.

I thought it might be fun to pick or alternate between fiction and non-fiction as long as it loosely remains associated with the code4lib purview, but it would be a shame if our focus was too niche.

Personally, I'm a science fiction and dystopia fan. The highbrow English major within is a modernist, but I've let him atrophy. Right now I'm reading Hyperion (Dave Mitchell) and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - but my Overdrive checkout will expire long before I can grind through the latter.
