I know this will sound a bit silly, but as an elementary school ELA and social studies teacher, I have learned to start in the children's section of the library when I am interested in learning about a particular historical figure or historical event. After getting the basics, I head to the adult biography or history section. My favorite time to read about is the American Revolutionary period.

Any of Eve Bunting's books are terrific! The Wall and Fly Away Home are two of my favorites. I love using her books during an Author Study with my 5th grade students. Her books generally have more of a somber tone rather than light-hearted.

Angie - thanks for the website recommendation. And Chris - thanks for the book recommendation On Hallowed Ground. I can't wait to read that one.
My all-time favorite YA book is The Outsiders! It's hard to believe that S.E. Hinton was only a teenager herself when she wrote it!
Another great YA read is My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. It is told, alternately by different characters, and has an ending you will not see coming at all!

Hi everyone! I'm Kathryn. My closest branch is Finksburg. I was so excited when it opened! I am an elem school Humanities teacher (ELA and Social Studies) in CCPS. I also have a Masters Degree in School Library Media. I LOVE to read. During the school year, I am always trying to keep up with the books my students read for Lit Circles. In the summer, I look forward to reading for my own pleasure. I mostly love to read nonfiction, especially biographies. My favorite fiction authors are Dean Koontz and Jodi Picoult. A book I read recently that I could not stop thinking about is Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.
