If she were still Amish, she definitely would not be investigating the murders, and the killer probably would have gone uncaught. I agree that she would be keeping any feelings as a result of her rape bottled up in "support" of her family. I grew up Lutheran and they encourage similar behavior. I felt that it caused me to grow up emotionally deficient and I was not aware of my short comings until my early 20s and then had to learn emotions and how to express them. I would like to point out that Amish only have an 8th grade education.
Her first years away had to have been incredibly scary... no money, friends, ideas on what to do. Having that friend who found her asleep in her car was a huge blessing. I think just with the type of personality she had she probably experienced some excitement as well. I think the idea of such an adventure with no idea where it would take her would thrill her. I don't think Kate would have been happy staying Amish and being a mother only. She would have felt very unfulfilled.
