98218 War and Peace

Is anyone going to be watching the television mini series? Has anyone made it through the whole book? I have tried a few times, but, .....have always wanted to. Kind of interested to hear if the mini series is close to the book, or not.

98218 What are everyone or anyone's thoughts on bringing back a monthly discussion on a book?

Should we do so again? Should we pick out of 4 or 5 books? Any suggestions?

98218 I am amazed at the amount of books most of you have been able to get through during the year! Good for you all!

Laura, I too try to balance some longer books with some really short ones. Need to finish the Game of Throne series, and may tackle IQ84 as well.

98218 Kristin,

That is a great idea for 2016! I looked again at what I read, and made 29 and had set my goal for 20. I think I will leave it at 20, but will definitely try to exceed even 29. I like your idea of reading a ya book. I haven't read much in that genre.

I made a goal of 20 books and have read 26, may make one more but maybe not....just depends on the family thing.

For those that celebrate...have a good holiday!!!

98218 Steph, I think I read most of King until Cujo, then I lost interest until recently when I read Joyland which was good. Didn't really get into the Dark Tower series but may try again at another time. Finished The Submission which was a good one.

I don't know if I have Mistborn or not....I am trying to read books I have without purchasing anymore first. My at home library is probably bigger than Barnes and Noble so I have enough to keep me busy for quite some time..and then there is what is on my iPad.....

98218 Hello....I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and am like you...my roommates don't read at all. At first, I had gotten the boy, I live with a couple and their son, to read, but now that he is a teenager he thinks it is boring.

I am just about done with 'The Submission' a story about an architect who designs and wins a competition to design a memorial for the 9/11 site. As it was a blind competition the jury didn't know who the architect was until the chose the design, well, it turns out, he is Muslin.....now what? Good book.

I like the classics, Dickens, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, also Murakami. Sorry no Shakespeare and I don't know if you can get me to read Shades of Grey....

Hello readers! (4 new)

98218 I have read the first three Martin books and am taking a break, will get back to them soon. I am currently on 'Girl, Interrupted' about a girl in an insane asylum. Interesting and very quick moving so far. Also am reading another Russian classic 'Fathers and Sons'. It is pretty good, but then I have always loved Russian novels.
98218 I am reading 'Paris' be Edward Rutherfurd, a historical novelist, whose long books are normally quite accurate. This one so far, (about 120 pages into it) is no exception, however, he has made reading this very slow going. We start off in 1875 then go to 1883, then go backwards to 1261, then jump forward to 1885 then 1887 then 1307, etc. As the chapters are fairly short, 25 pages, considering this is a 800 page book, it makes it hard to know where you are.

His other books, 'The Princes of Ireland', 'Sarum', 'Russka', 'London', we're all written in a linear pattern, some chapters jumping hundreds of years but that was easier to follow. I will continue though as he brings a normally dry and boring subject to the reader in relatable fashion. He tells us the story of both common man and aristocrat through their daily lives.
98218 I recently watched Phillip Hoffman's portrayal of Capote, man was that scary. Both from the perspective that Hoffman had recently passed and that he was able to capture every little gesture and speak pattern of Capote's perfectly and remembering a few taped interviews of Truman Capote's.

98218 I have never done socks, but have made a few lace blankets. On my third of the same pattern right now. Love cable work too...
98218 Jennifer, have a good and safe trip!

From the comments, I think I will forego Sanderson for quite awhile. I have so many books that I haven't read yet, that I am trying to go on a buying diet!
