98218 Jennifer, I was surprise too that the book was by the Borgias but in a pleasant way due to the fact that I watched their BBC canal series a few months ago and enjoyed it.

I also read the Devil in the White City and I did like it. Did you know there's a goodreads quiz on it?

98218 Welcome to the group Kat!

Do you drink loose leaf tea? I find that lovers of knitters & books tend to be tea addicts!

What are you reading now?
98218 I am reading the Family by Mario Puzo. The same writer of the Godfather books.

The Family is about the Borgia Family, a powerful family during the renaissance.

What are you reading and what made you pick that book?

98218 I recently finished No Way Down: Life and Death on K2. This is not my first travel book, having read Tracks by Robyn Davidson, and a few others that are not so recent.

This is however, the first travel book that I have read that covers a tragedy. I was a bit taken aback that it was labeled as travel. The popular books are not the travel books in my opinion. Does anyone else read travel books? Do people talk about travel books anymore? I know with travel blogs and other social media, it's much easier to get a glimpse of other areas but is it the same?

Has anyone read No Way Down? Thoughts?

98218 Anyone reading it at the moment?

I have started this book as the monthly book read.

The only reason I am reading it is because I know J.K. Rowling is the author but at the same time, I see myself loving this type of book if I had known about it under her pen name.

98218 I have finished the book!

The book I found to be wonderful, just like any of Murakami's novels, of which I enjoy greatly.

There was an article about how in Tokyo there has been a cafe that has been desginated the Murakami cafe here:

As well, what I found interesting was that on reddit, there was a debate here about how genders portray the other gender unrealistically in their novels. Murakami came up for that because of his portrayal of women, and how the majority of females in his novels are either always mysterious but never say why they are mysterious or the fact that every female has sex with the progtagonist without a second thought. This is especially true of Norwegian Wood where the three women all have sex with him and involved with him on various levels.

Anyone have any thoughts on this.

98218 Goodreads is unique in the sense that authors can hold their own giveaways under the giveaways link. But recently I have been receiving emails about books that are on my shelf that are recently listed as giveaways.

I know there is a slight stipulation as to review the book if you win on some, but I am wondering what does everyone else think of this feature? Is it a good feature? What about the email alerts?

A lot of people enter the giveaways, but not a lot of people read the books that are being contested sometimes.

I entered giveaways as a chance to read a little known author that I wouldn't see on the stacks along with the big names. That and I always if I can review each book I read.

98218 @Megan, in which way are you finding it depressing? I am not very far into the book, and although I always like Murakami's works, this book isn't as riveting as some of his others, but I am not sure if that is only because I haven't delved very deeply into it yet.

98218 In the book, a friend says that he wont touch any book by any author who had not been dead 30 years. Did anyone find this peculiar? Or does everyone have rules and quirks about reading.

Also what does everyone think of the novel being set in the early 1970's ? i did not expect that.

98218 @Nam, The author did added his knowledge to the documentary at certain parts.I actually wish I had seen this documentary before having read the book as a general guide or introduction into video games history and debates.

98218 @Vinicius, which Murakami book did you read?
Feb 01, 2015 06:41PM

98218 If you have read or are planning to read Ready Player One, the documentary Video Games: The movie should be seen to go along with the book or after reading it.

98218 What does everyone think of reading about characters who are making food or eating in books? does it make you hungry or is it something that does not appeal to us as readers?
