Theodore Roosevelt Poll:

It appears that by the end of the President's Poll that Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt were tied. Then somehow after we had voted on the Thomas Jefferson book, Teddy pulled ahead!!

So now we have to make it up to all of the Theodore Roosevelt voters and a book by or about Theodore Roosevelt will be our next Presidential Series selection.

This selection will begin on June 1, 2010 and will continue for three months (June, July and August). This discussion will be led by Bryan. Bryan has an extraordinary background and will be a great moderator to lead this discussion. He and Joe now share the responsibilities for the Presidential Series reads and will be alternating book discussions. They are both Assisting Moderators for the Presidential Series.

We have added all of the books nominated on the Theodore Roosevelt thread. However, if you do not see your favorite book on this list; then just comment or pop me a note and I will immediately add it to this poll.

You can always change your vote at any time; so nothing is lost. Some of the TR books deal with only a certain period of his life, one is multi-volume (the Morris books - I have added both separately), some deal with other founding fathers too; some are all encompassing, others deal with specific events in TR's life or presidency and others are by the man, himself.

Before making your selection, please try to look up your choice and make sure it really is a book you are interested in; do not be lured in by the title. Also, check out the author and what others have said about the book before you (reviewers who you trust). Then of course, make your selection.

It appears that when you vote for a selection it moves it up in the listing. The McCullough book that I selected was actually posted and added to the listings as number 13 out of 24. This must be a new goodreads feature. Unusual. I also want to say that the Morris books also captured my interest too and so many others. Many great books are on this list and we cannot go wrong.

Sera I've read the HW Brands book and highly recommend it if it doesn't win.

message 3: by Lilla (new)

Lilla Alas, I would have been more interested in Jefferson (he's my favorite president) so I'll be sitting this out.

Yes Sera HW Brands is "always" a good read. I was tempted by that choice too.

I am not sure I like the new Goodreads feature which rearranges the listing of the selection offerings...I hate to think that the ones which are already voted on are being placed in a more favorable position. Every book in the list has merit and these are all good reads.

Don't forget to add author's link, photo, book cover when mentioning various selections. It also helps folks link to your faves. It is only the comment area but it still counts.

message 7: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I went to an interview tonight with Tim Egan who wrote "The Big Burn" and now I am all excited to read it. Bought one autographed and personalized by the author....squee! As confident as I am this will be a great read, it is more about the events surrounding this extraordinary event and not singularly focused on Teddy Roosevelt. If the point of the group read is to focus on his time as President, this won't be the best selection. The events in this book certainly involve Teddy Roosevelt, but the central event to this book happened during his post-Presidency.

Thank you for the explanation Alisa..it does look like a great book nonetheless.

From what I have been able to glean, if folks have not voted they see a different line-up than the books with their number of votes. They see the books in the order they were added.

What goodreads now does is take all of the votes and then shows folks "after they have voted" what the line up looks like. That makes me feel a bit better.

message 10: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig I think you are right, Bentley. However, I can't remember if you can see the votes before you vote.

message 11: by Bentley (new)

Bentley Mod
I was told no; you vote and then you see them. But that could be wrong (smile). I honestly was shocked when I saw this new feature but happier after I was told the fact that the line-up only changed after you voted.

message 12: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig You might be right. I will pay closer attention in the next poll.

message 13: by Alisa (new)

Alisa That's how it worked when I voted recently in this poll. Voting results were not visible until after I made my selection.

message 14: by Bentley (new)

Bentley Mod
Great..then I feel better about this feature...thanks Alisa for the confirmation.

Bryan Craig Me too. I haven't read it yet and it is supposed be quite good.

Glad to see Edmund Morris getting another vote.

message 18: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig It could come into 2nd place. You know if we read the first Morris book, we might need to read the second one right after ;-)

Well true, Mornings seems to be out ahead though and we do sample Presidents in order of their vote. But we certainly capture the voting and who knows what the results might eventually be; we have until midnight on the 14th I believe so there are four more days of voting including today.

Most of the time with multi-volume sets (being that we are a group with diverse interests) - we sample volume one and then allow the group to revote if they want to continue with the set.

message 20: by Sera (new)

Sera People can also change their vote after voting. I often do when I see a tight race and my first choice wasn't one of them. This way people can still have a say in the ultimate outcome of the vote.

message 21: by Bentley (last edited Apr 11, 2010 07:46AM) (new)

Bentley Mod
That is true...but most folks I hope are voting for a book they really would want to read and one that has the most interest for them..All of the books selected have merit and for the most part would be enjoyable.

The selections are prioritized and even though your choice might not win this time; if it has at least "one vote" it will be in a vote off at some time.

If you change your vote and nobody votes for the book you really wanted to read; chances are it will not be selected now or in the future. Of course, you can still read it on your own (smile).

message 22: by Sera (new)

Sera Not sure that I understand how future vote offs work, but I certainly agree that reading a book on one's own remains an option :)

message 23: by Bentley (new)

Bentley Mod
Hi Sera,

First, we try to gauge reader interest with these polls; and these polls help the moderators's team determine not only the current book but what other readable selections the group membership might be interested in. However, in the final analysis, since I read each one; if there is a selection which is not a good selection for a group discussion, I reserve the right to skip it. That has not happened as yet.

Second, we set up a list of the books in order. If a selection received the most votes, it is selected first and so on. Those that do not receive any votes will probably not be read by the group. If there is a cluster of books that for example all have received one vote; at some point in time we will vote again for that group only to see how the selections shake out.

Third, of course there are many times that a favorite book does not do well in a group vote and then any member can post me and ask to read that specific book and I will set up a thread for them to moderate the book and to see if there is a buddy in the group who might want to read it with them.

And of course, the final choice I guess is to read it on one's own (smile).

Hope this helps.
