Laura Harrison The Thing About Luck should win the Newbery Gold. Doll Bones should win an honor. The title might be a little controversial but definitely fantastic storytelling. This was truly a great year for children's books of all ages.

Carol Royce Owen I have been pushing The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp since I read it. The fact that Kathi Appelt had six stories going on which she cleverly wove together in the end was just masterful. In my book it's leaps and bounds over the rest, although I'm sure others don't agree. Have to say though, I just read Far, Far Away. Wow! A very close second, and if I could vote twice, that would be my other choice. After that it's The Real Boy, Better Nate than Ever and Counting By 7s, but at a distant. I was not a huge fan of Flora and Ulysses.

Mary HD While Doll Bones is my strong favorite for the Newbery, I really hope that Far Far Away gets some award attention, and isn't passed over by the respective committees because it's "too old" for the Newbery and "too young" for the Printz...

Josephine Sorrell I just finished the Mouse With the Question Mark Tail. I didn't like the story, but I did like the writing. It read like a"tongue in cheek" kind of story. It was about mice and their antics under the noses of the humans. I didn't there was enough story. I didn't care to read the descriptiveness of the attire and royalty. Here's a quote I liked: "
It was very dank, there under the cat's tail. Worse, yet,she stopped short once, and I was nearly faced with disaster."

Kristine How are we going to determine honor book? are you just going to take #2 & #3 or run the poll again?

I would love to run the poll again and get a say after we determine a winner :)

We will have one week left for some honor books. I'm not quite sure how we will work it yet. I would like to narrow the poll a bit.

message 7: by Caren (new)

Caren I also loved, "The Great Trouble", though it would need to be sold to kids and it would have a select audience.
I couldn't put it down.

message 8: by Kim (new)

Kim McGee I think "Counting by 7's" had the greatest impact but I truly enjoyed "Far,Far Away"and "The Real Boy".

message 9: by Melody (new)

Melody I shared the selection list with my 6th grade son, because we've read or listened to a lot of these. He unequivocally selected "Navigating Early" for the choice to win the 2014 Newbery. What date will the Committee announce the real winner?

Julie Pickett I am so happy there is someone else out there who truly loved The True Blue Scouts of Sugarman Swamp. I also think Kathi Appelt is a masterful storyteller. She can weave folktale elements effortlessly into her plots and this one is her best by far. And oh did I love those raccoons!

message 14: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell Just finished The Year of Billy Miller. It was just heart warming. I wish every child lockdown live in a home likeBilly and Sal.

message 15: by Jill (new)

Jill I've really enjoyed reading possible newbery books with this group. I hope to do it again next year. I'm so excited to hear the real winner and see if it is one that we all liked.

message 16: by Carol (new)

Carol Royce Owen So, are we starting a new book this month for the 2015 awards?

Lets take the month off. We will read whatever book ALA chooses as the medal winner and honors for Febuary and then we get to start all over again for March. Hopefully we have already read some of the winners.
