I'm curious to see what ongoing anime series you guys are watching. I find recommendations through blog sites like The Cart Driver and Random Curiousity, but there's always a chance I'm missing out on something! I'm currently watching:

- Lupin III : Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna
- Wolverine the anime
- Rock Lee and his Ninja Pals (they're so cute as chibis!)

I watched about 50 of the first episodes via Netflix and I stopped keeping up because there were too many filler episodes to the point of ridiculousness. Although I might jump midway into Shippuden since I been hearing a lot of ill shit going on.

Anyone got any recommendations? I've only seen Aoi Hana but would love to get into Anime properly.

message 6: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (Orienthi) | 15 comments Well Stefani,

The three I mentioned above are awesome,

The first two are adventure/comedies and Darker than black is more a drama.

Hell Girl is another favorite, its dark though. I am not sure what kind of anime you are into? Do you have an idea what genres you like?

I'm not sure, I stumbled across Aoi Hana by accident. I'm quite open to pretty much anything. I will definitely check out the ones you've mentioned. Thanks!

Fi Miller | 2 comments Currently watching: Cowboy Bebop!

Previous to watching this classic I finished: FMA: Brotherhood (best anime series I've ever seen in my opinion), Darker than Black (S1), Bleach (main arc, although I've seen most of the filler too...the awful filler...) and Baccano! To name a few...

^_^

I've never seen Aoi Hana before so I'm not sure which genre to steer you in, but I agree with the rest of the ladies. FMA: Brotherhood and Cowboy Bebop is a great place to start.

One of the first anime I've watched and still love dearly is Samurai Champloo. I think it's a good selection for a beginner because it's funny, sentimental, yet adventurous at the same time. The sword fights are pretty kick ass too.

I also recommend Ghost in the Shell: SAC which is cyberpunk, action, and suspense. Redline is an anime movie that has absolutely no plot, but the animation is amazing and the characters are drawn so ill. And Death Note is a must-watch!

I just finished Croisee in a Foreign Labyrinth. it's adorable and the story is deep yet subtle. the animation is beautiful!

Going to finish Chobits as well.

If you're looking for something more slice-of-life and cutesy to watch, I recommend Daily Lives of High School Boys. I watched it for the first time over the weekend, and it is soooo funny!

"High-school boys are really simple and curious creatures. They want one and only one thing: girls. But they haven’t got a clue about them. Male teenagers are dumbfounded by the girls’ thought process, actions, appearance and everything in between. They spend countless hours amongst themselves discussing and arguing their theories which are usually completely off base. If only they had the courage to ask them instead of screwing around and talking about nonsensical things, they might get somewhere." - WIkipedia

I am watching Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note. These are great and have an amzing story line and the characters are fabulous.
Some others i would reccomend are Baka and Test: Summon the Beast (silly and fun), Ouran Highschool Host Club (pretty crazy, but i wouldn't watch it if you aren't a fan of yaoi. It's not a main thing but it's in there), and Hetalia: Axis Powers (i love the chibi-ness. It's so cuuute!).
Oh, and Black Butler and D. Gray Man are pretty awesome too.

I'd recommend Baccano, Soul Eater, and Samurai Champloo.

The Caffeinated Lady (ravenofpoe14) Hell Girl is working it's way into being one of my top favorites. And I absolutely LOVED Soul Eater. I just wish it had progressed a bit farther after two seasons.

Elfen Lied was fun in some ways, I definitely didn't mind the gore (haha!) But, forgive me for being a little critical, I thought the characters were a bit flat. Yuka was the most annoying character. I kinda wanted her to die.

Chimney wrote: "Mia, Baccano! is one of my favorite anime! I am really happy to know someone else enjoys it too."

Yes! I loved Baccano! even though it was confusing at first, the way it jumps around from story line to story line, and back and forth through time, it was really wonderful. I might even watch it again.

Neal Cormier (nealcormier) | 5 comments It occurs to me: Why am I not always wondering conditions brought about, supposedly by my gender...? Interesting how this carries over to books and reading, a typically female dominated industry, fiction.

Lela wrote: "Oh, and the voice acting really bothered me. The pitch, the tone, it just didn't seem authentic. A little to... innocent, for lack of a better term. Is this present in many animes?"

Ah yes, high-pitched female voices are very prevalent in anime, but it's not always the case. You will run into a lot of anime where a handful of female characters are ditzy, soft spoken, or existing plainly for their cup size. I want to speculate one of the reasons for this is because a lot of anime are made by men for men which results in the oh so popular "fan service," a term originated from manga/anime. In America, we consider it inappropriate to mingle our "innocent" cartoons with sexual innuendos, but in Japan, everyone watches anime, not just the kids. This will often result in one-dimensional female characters.

When I first started watching anime, this was one of the cultural differences that threw me off the most. Thankfully, there's more than enough anime with strong, ass-kicking female leads so don't let a few ruin your anime experience. Ghost in the Shell: SAC is one of my favorite anime that showcase an intelligent and headstrong female lead, Major Motoko. Matter fact, I don't want to say she's a strong female lead. She's a strong lead character, period. She can go toe-to-toe with many popular male characters. I believe Black Lagoon and Claymore also portrays women in a more natural light. Although in Claymore, I find it is the male who is too aggravating and whiny to watch lol.

I think we should create another thread with recs for anime with strong female leads. I'm always looking for those. And damn, girl. *Elfen Lied as your first anime selection is pretty bold! I know 300lb. men who can't stomach the first 15 minutes!

I have to agree. Those innocent and huge cup-sizes bothered me at first, but I've gotten used to them as I've become more experienced watching anime.
Another ass-kicking female would be Riza Hawkeye from Full-metal alchemist and Maka from Soul Eater isn't too bad either.

Oh yes, I totally agree with everything you Lela, and Kay pointed out. Although I have found some Anime where women are portrayed better, there are still quite a few that really annoy me. It's not just that they have high or annoying voices, or ridiculously large breasts, but its also the way they are portrayed as really stupid, shallow, or easily frightened. I've found some of the same qualities in some classic Hollywood movies from the 40's and 50's as well. I always like it when I find some female characters that I can admire. I'll be looking into that new thread, and hopefully contribute some suggestions when I come across an anime with strong female characters.

=)

Lis (lazyseagull) Anime is a bit new to me. All of my friends were fans a long time ago, and I've pretty much only just started.

Anyhow, I really, REALLY loved Death Note (the anime, I'm not really one for reading mangas or graphic novels ing eneral). I also watched Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) which was also very, very good.

I've tried to get into a few others since, but they've all been too long or just not my type of thing.

message 44: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 133 comments Ok, I said I would let you all know about Nightraid 1931, and...it wasn't that great. It had a good premise and a good start, but then it lost momentum when it got too caught up in its basis in history. I love history and historical fictions, but there are better ways to go about it. This was like watching a really boring historical documentary NOT put on by the History Channel. (In my opinion, the History Channel does a good job)
Now I'm on to Black Butler. Actually, I'm already more than halfway through it, and I have to say, I'm loving it! Sebastian is so cool, and I love the dark undertone to the show. It's put me in the perfect mood for the month of October. Although I haven't finished it yet, I highly recommend it!
