Kim | 1499 comments Ok people I want to get 6 books for next months sci-fi poll. The theme is female authors. Each member gets 1 nomination and 1 second. Only first in a series/standalone books please and also have the title and author with links.

For my nomination I'm going to go with something a bit different for the group and go back to the beginning with Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 292 comments Natural History. Before her success with the cyberpunk/fantasy Quantum Gravity series, Justina Robson originally found success with several excellent thoughtful hard-SF novels. This is a fascinating take on Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life.

message 4: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 693 comments Dawn. I have been wanting to read this forever, I have heard so many good things

message 6: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments I gotta second Dawn.... How can not?

message 7: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 2 comments I'll put in a third vote for Dawn. It's been on my to-read shelf for quite awhile.

message 8: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 2 comments I neglected to put the links in for this. My bad. My vote is for Dawn by Octavia E. Butler

I'll second Frankenstein.

Cathy (cathygreytfriend) | 122 comments I love Spin State by Chris Moriarty. It's really strong classic sci-fi, mixes up military, tech, morality issues, you name it.

message 11: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Bester (stephan7878) | 11 comments Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

message 12: by Michelle (last edited Aug 25, 2012 03:03PM) (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) | 344 comments huge second for 'spin state' - that one has come strongly recommended to me for a good while now. my nom is for another supposedly marvelous but long neglected by me book, Warchild.

Andrea, i adore Melissa Scott, but that one's out of print and may be hard for people to find :(

message 13: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Ok so that's 3 books so far. Frankenstein, Dawn and Spin State. Just need 3 more.

message 14: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments No we're not voting here, this is just the nomination thread.

Kim | 1499 comments Everitt wrote: "Ok, I thought that was still the case but noticed you used the words "1 vote 1 nomination" and wanted to be sure.

On that note, I'll nominate, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin."

Whoops thanks, fixed that. Sorry though, the group has already done The Left Hand of Darkness in 2009. We've done 5 Le Guin novels so far.

message 16: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 411 comments I would like to nominate Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. It has been recommended to me by several people.

message 17: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 462 comments Speaking of Elizabeth Moon, I've been wanting to read The Speed of Dark for a while. I'll put in a nomination for that.

Kim | 1499 comments Well we're running pretty close to the wire here, and I apologise for letting it get this close so I'll make an executive decision and start the poll now. I'll take those books that only had initial nomination for this month only so we can get this poll running. Normally we'll only allow one nomination per author but due to the circumstances I'll allow it this mont.
