Maggie Lucy Steele! (grits teeth) and, oh Lord, Isabella and John Thorpe! That sibling pair is worse than even the Crawfords!

I think I agree about the Thorpes being worse!!

message 8: by Nicole D. (new)

Nicole D. (thereadingrebel) | 158 comments I don't know about that.I think Henry Crawford is worse then John Thorpe but Isabelle Thorpe is worse then Mary Crawford.

A. (ahartleyscribbles) | 115 comments Lydia Bennet (So annoying!)
Mrs. Bennet (ditto)
Frank Churchill (a very ungentlemanly fellow)
The Eltons (although I get a kick out of them)
Wickham (the dirty dog)
Elizabeth and Mary Elliot (They treat Anne so badly!)
Sir Walter Elliot (ditto)
John Dashwood (I think I dislike him more than fanny because he goes along with her. I don't like 'wishy-washy')
Lucy Steele (she's such a cat. Poor Elinor)

GREAT list!!
Adding Lydia to mine!!

Who's everyone's top top bad character?
I think mine has to be Wickham!

message 14: by A. (new)

A. (ahartleyscribbles) | 115 comments Top bad character?.....hmmm...Wickham's probably close to the top if not right at it.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Wickham for me too!

message 16: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I also dislike Willoughby and... Churchill!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Lydia Bennet. So shallow and silly and uncaring for everything around her. Ugh.

message 18: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Lydia is so.... So... There aren't the words!

message 19: by Marren (new)

Alicia Johnson?

dilike the other two as well!

message 21: by A. (new)

A. (ahartleyscribbles) | 115 comments I agree totally about Mary Elliot. She drove me nuts! But I found Lady Catherine de Bourgh amusing more than annoying.

message 22: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Alicia Johnson is a bad friend to Susan in Lady Susan. Catherine is quite a character. She was shock when Eliz dare reply, haha, serves her well!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Lydia Bennet and Mrs. Bennet... ugh.

And Mr. Collins was kind of annoying too but he was funny also so he wasn't that bad.

message 24: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Actually. Lady C is amusing as is Mr Collins. Don't normally find them annoying....

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Lady C and Mr. Collins were both funny but when I was imagining myself as Elizabeth I could easily find them obnoxious.

message 26: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I guess!
Though I think she mostly found Lady C annoying.
But, at the verbal fencing match ;) she was not so amusing - Lizzy or Lady Catherine!

And Mr C, I think she was mostly annoyed by him yes. Especially when he comes to gloat on the fact that Lizzy didn't marry him (when Lydia runs off)

message 27: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) General Tilney is another I don't like! Horrid behaviour!

message 28: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
i don't like him either, but then, imagine NA without him.
This is why i love the last line, 'I leave it to be settled by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or reward filial disobedience.'

Parental tyranny - if he had not interferred and got Cathy to NA, would their relationshipn have developed enough to the point of marriage, and the point of...
filial disobedence!

i love this line! really makes you think!

???

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading Persuasion right now and I have almost all of Austen's books on my Kindle! They were FREE even! I'll have to read NA next. And is Tilney a Wickham-ish type or some other type of horrid character?

message 30: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Let us know what you think of Persuasion.

Well, Henry Tilney is the hero. Captain Tilney is his brother and is a bit naughty and General Tilney is his father and is a bit rude. :)

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah, got it.

I've just found out who Wentworth is in Persuasion. So far he sounds like a pretty nice guy. Anne better end up with him!

message 32: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Wentworth yes!

Can't wait to hear what you think when you have read it more!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

You guys are making me really excited (and expectant) for the rest of the book!

Top bad character?I think Willoughby wins for me but Henry Crawford and Mrs.Norris aren't far behind.

Mrs Norris... EVIL!

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Mrs. Norris... the cat? LOL

Which book is she in?

Mansfield Park. She is an evil witch.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahh.

message 40: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments May I add John Thorpe. He is extremely irritating and his sister Isabella Thorpe, she thinks she is sooo smart with her compliments of Catherine but I suspected her from early on.

message 41: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
YEA! I mentioned them.
Dislike both of them!! :l

message 42: by Rebecca (last edited Oct 22, 2012 06:34PM) (new)

Rebecca May | 561 comments Haha, my personal list (in no particular order really) -

1. Lucy Steele - conniving little vixen, so silly and spiteful and manipulative and clingy!
2. Willoughby and Wickham - same reasons really, each of them are dashing enough, but underneath lying, selfish, shallow, conniving, money seeking prats.
3. Lady Catherine - need I say more?

Those are pretty much the few that I pretty much hate from those books that I have read. I feel I have to point out that Mr Collins is not on my list, because at least until the end of Pride and Prejudice I was merely so amused by his silliness and presumptuousness and pompousness and idiocy, that I just laughed at him and thought that he mostly had no idea what a prat he was. So I find it hard to hate him, but it's very easy to be condescending towards him. But I do dislike him, certainly!

message 43: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Agree about Collins - mostly he was amusing!

And good list... Austen has such a talent for creating loveable and not so Loveable characters!

message 44: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca May | 561 comments Thanks. :) Haha, yeah, during pretty much every scene with Mr Collins in it in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice I am just cracking up the whole time. The novel makes it a lot clearer how mean he was towards Lizzy at the end.

:D Good way to put it "not so loveable". She does have amazing talent, doesn't she?

message 45: by A. (new)

A. (ahartleyscribbles) | 115 comments Mr. Collins was an annoying twerp, but when he and Lady Catherine got together I couldn't help but laugh!

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Mr. Elliot - I don't think much more needs to be said.

message 47: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Cat, I agree, he is irritating to the max..

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Almost done with Persuasion!
