The two books are barely connected. So, each can be read alone. It does not matter which you read first, but I would suggest starting with ROGUE OF ROUXVILLE.
But, don't let me put you off reading ALIWAL, which is full of historical interest and unusual information about 19th century immigration to the Cape Colony!

In brief, the book is about a young German immigrant, Jakob Klein, who settles in Rouxville in the old Orange Free State. In trying to support his ever growing family, he resorts to some dodgy business practices, which land him in trouble with the law. He loses his home, his family flee from Rouxville, and he is imprisoned.
The novel, set mostly in the 1870s, describes how he got into this mess, and what happened next.

At first Jakob was successful. Them, he began to have trouble supporting his rapidly increasing family. He resorted to business practices, which led him into debt and gradually into prison.
My latest novel, set in the 1870s, describes this and how he coped with his loss of liberty and separation from his family.
Based on a information gleaned from the National Archives of South Africa and other official records, this work of fiction records the precarious life led by one of my colourful relatives.
In order to encourage readership, I have priced ROGUE OF ROUXVILLE at less than £1.50 (and under US $2) on Amazon's KINDLE.
As they say: ENJOY!
