Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments NOVEMBER HISTORY CHALLENGE
Duration: November 1 - November 30

November's theme is Historical Fiction, so this is our history-themed challenge.

1. Historical Fiction: Read a historical fiction book

2. Sagas: Read a book that follows a family or group of friends over a long period of time (a minimum of 20 years)

3. Time Warp: Read a book that involves time travel in some way

4. YOUR History: Read a book set in a place where your family is originally from; you can go as specific (city) or as general (country or geographical region) as you like (e.g., my great-grandparents immigrated from Okinawa, Japan, so I could read The Girl with the White Flag: A Spellbinding Account of Love and Courage in Wartime Okinawa)

5. HISTORY: Read a book where at least one of the author's initials can be found in the word "history"

6. Origins: The word "history" comes from Greek the ἱστορία (historia), meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation," so read a book with a mystery of some sort in it

7. The History of...: Read a nonfiction account of the history or the background of something (examples would be Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, Salt: A World History, or The Professor & the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity & the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary) OR a book (any kind of book) with the word "history" in its title

8. The Father of History: Herodotus, who lived in the 5th century BC, is considered to be the Father of History. Because he played fast and loose with the truth, he has also been called the "Father of Lies." Read a book in which the protagonist tells a lie in order to serve his or her own ends.

9. Alternate History: What if things had gone differently? Read a book classified as "alternate history." You can check out the genre list here: http://www.goodreads.com/genres/alter...

Melanie will be our leader for this challenge.

My dad was in the military, which is how he met my mom, so most of her family is still in Okinawa, but I know she has some family in Hawaii that we used to visit during the short time we lived there. But now she just has her group in Seattle and I'm just getting involved with mine in Austin. This has been a very exciting week for me!
