October Group Read: Blood Brothers by Nora Roberts

I started listening to this on audiobook tonight while I put away my clothes. It's very good so far. I like seeing the guys as kids and their closeknit relationship despite their disparate backgrounds.
Is anyone else reading this now? I like it on audiobook. It adds another layer to the story. And joy of all joys, I needed a Q heroine, and there you have it with Quinn. So far I am liking Cal, although I have a feeling Gage will be my favorite since I like the brooding hero.
I like the sinister/dark paranormal feel of the story. It's a good pick for the Something Scary theme.

I was kind of indifferent to Cal, I really liked him and Quinn together but didn't really care that much for him by himself one way or the other. I liked Quinn more than I liked him, but I tend to like the heroines more than the heroes in most of the books I've read (unless I like them both equally, which does happen).
I have to agree, I think out of the three, I'm going to like Gage the best. You never know, Fox might surprise us!
I'm planning on continuing the series, but it's on the back burner given all the challenges I've signed up for this month.
We might open up a buddy read thread for the other books if we have enough people interested, Cassandra.
That's cool that you finished the book in 3 days!

A buddy read for the others sounds good, Lady D! I listened to Blood Brothers using the Overdrive software, which as a speed setting that I normally have on 2x. It took some getting use with the first audiobook I listened to like that but it's become standard to me to listen to all my audiobooks at 2x speed. That's really helpful if the book is really long, like A Game of Thrones which is over 28 hours.

I read these a while ago so my memories aren't completely clear, I may have to reread. But I do agree with Megan, I think Fox will surprise you all, he and his crazy family are just awesome.
On the scary side of things, I just loved the whole idea of this book, it sort of felt very Stephen King to me, with a crazy little town going through something totally weird every seven years but everyone just forgetting about it in between and the little kid just scared the be Jesus out of me. The idea that it's evil infected people was truly frightening, you just never new what was going to happen, who was the enemy.
I think I might have to reread, because rehashing it always makes me think how much I enjoyed it.
Yes Jill! I still get creeped out when I re-read....the little kid gets me every time. Especially when he's outside the window, or floating in the air. Ok, just basically whenever he's anywhere LOL!

What she said. Almost exactly. *Shiver* kinda creepy, huh.

To answer the optional questions...
1. What do you think of the characters? Who stands out to you? Is the villain a scary character?
I loved the boys. I think you really get the whole friendship things from them being kids and you've still got it now. I had great fun with the dialogues. The girls are okay, I just find Layla a bit weird. But then she's not opened up yet, so we'll see what book 2 says. Villain is creepy, but I like the fact that you know it's only going to get worse... That makes me happy, can't wait to find out how far he can go ! But he was sure bad in a previous life !
2. Does the storyline keep your interest? The writing draw you in?
Totally drawn in. The plot is interesting with the whole genealogy thing and I do like it when things go scary :)
3. What did you like about Blood Brothers? What didn't you like about this book?
Pass. I don't like the library smell coming from the paperback. Urgh !
4. Are you going to continue this series?
Yes, already started number 2 and considering forking out the £1.45 to reserve the last one so I know it's there when I go to the library next !
5. What books would you recommend to readers who enjoyed this one?
Generation Evil: A Novel of Witches and Reincarnation - I don't have much experience of books about witches and paranormal stuff, so I can't really give any recommendations - but I'm enjoying this one ! And it's got a mean baddie in it too !
6. Overall rating out of 1-10 or out of 1-5 stars? I'd give it 5 stars due to the fact that I just couldn't stay away from the book. It's well written, and the story's interesting, and the characters are believable (despite it being a fictional story). Yep, I enjoyed it. Now hoping the rest is as good :)
Now I want parental advice from the O'Dells and the Hawkinses to raise my boy like theirs. When Cal goes all softy on his gran he makes my knees turn to jelly !

Yes Dd....Nora Roberts is so good at writing friendships. Several of her trilogies or series have a brotherhood or sisterhood type of core relationship that anchors the whole.

Absolutely.I've also read her Circle trilogy and loved it.Nora Roberts is a genius in potraying heart-warming kinship.

Don't worry.Gage and the others will absolutely kick the bastard's ass in the 3rd book.

Optional Discussion Questions
1. What do you think of the characters? Who stands out to you? Is the villain a scary character?
--I liked the characters. I especially liked the bond b/w Cal, Gage, and Fox. I liked seeing them as kids and then as adults. I can't say one stands out more than the other. I admit I am looking forward to reading Gage and Fox's books to explore their POV more. The villain was quite scary--completely supernatural. I got a huge Stephen King vibe, like in "It", "The Body," and "'Salem's Lot." Roberts has some very creepy scenes in this book! I was listening to the audiobook late and night and it was a bit eerie. Especially this past week, when it was chilly and windy outside and I could hear the roaring of the wind since my window as open!
2. Does the storyline keep your interest? The writing draw you in?
--The romance didn't really draw me as much. I guess I didn't feel the intensity between Quinn and Cal. The horror/supernatural aspects and the family/friend/small town aspect really make this book shine for me. Roberts is a good writer, but I think I like her suspense more than her romance writing (don't throw things at me).
3. What did you like about Blood Brothers? What didn't you like about this book?
--I loved the bond between the three guys and how they drew the women into their bond. I loved the small town story and the horror and the impact of that battle between Giles and the Demon (whatever it was). I think the narrator was the weak point for me. I didn't like the way he did the female voices. They sounded like a man in drag. Fox's voice sounded a little goofy as well.
4. Are you going to continue this series?
--Yes. I am curious to see how things conclude, and as I said, I love the bond between the blood brothers and I want to see Fox and Gage get their stories.
5. What books would you recommend to readers who enjoyed this one?
--I think if you liked the horror aspect, you'd enjoy Stephen King's books, especially 'Salem's Lot.
6. Overall rating out of 1-10 or out of 1-5 stars?
--Probably at 7.5/10 and a 3.75/5.0 stars.

I agree. They turned out to be wonderful men, Gage in spite of his dad!

Yeah, I'm not sure if my library has The Hollow. I know they have book 1 and 3.

1. What do you think of the characters? Who stands out to you? Is the villain a scary character? I did like the characters. I know this is the first in the series and we'll learn more about them in the rest of the series but I felt we got a good glimpse into their lives. Since this is Cal's story I guess he stood out most to me but I am curious about Gage and how his childhood affects him as an adult. I think the villain is uber-scary.
2. Does the storyline keep your interest? The writing draw you in? To a degree. I wasn't sucked in and it didn't really grab me but it was enough to stir my curiosity.
3. What did you like about Blood Brothers? What didn't you like about this book? The concept intrigued me but the execution didn't thrill me.
4. Are you going to continue this series? Possibly. I do want to know the outcome.
5. What books would you recommend to readers who enjoyed this one? Don't know. Maybe Karen Rose if someone wants some uber-villains and still have the romance element.
6. Overall rating out of 1-10 or out of 1-5 stars? Maybe a 4 out of 10 or 3 out of 5.

Is there still an interest in me opening up a buddy read thread for the rest of the series?

I don't know when I will get back to the series, but I can start a thread for it under buddy reads for chatting.
