Kim | 1499 comments Ok so firstly the random fantasy poll is up = http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/73...

Sci-fi Poll now up - http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/73...

There will be no theme poll for November. As I will not be available towards the end of the month I didn't want there to be an issue of no book chosen in time so I have made the decision to pick the theme.

The November theme is Sci-Fi Set In or Dealing with a Parallel/Alternate Universe. As per usual members get one nomination and one second. This will stay open til I think we have enough books. Please make your nominations in the following fashion (this is my nomination):

I nominate The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov. I've always felt I should read a bit more Asimov and this is up there as one of his best.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I would like to nominate 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami.

Katy (kathy_h) | 125 comments I've got The Gods Themselves on my TBR shelf so I will second it.

And I'll second 1Q84

Since you second my nomination, I'll second yours, which I really wish I had a copy since I have the other two books in the trilogy.

Katy (kathy_h) | 125 comments I'll nominate a Heinlein: The Number of the Beast

carol. | 256 comments Parallel/alternate universe Spin, Hugo award winner. I looked at shelves but it didn't seem like there was a discussion about it since 2010. Just a thought. Its a great book.

It was never an official group read so that's fine. Does it deal with alternate universes though?

message 11: by carol. (new)

carol. | 256 comments Alternate history, which I guess is what I think of for sci-fi in parallel/alternate universe. Has a Mars colony.

message 12: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 331 comments I'll second Spin, if it meets the criteria.

message 13: by Greyweather (last edited Oct 18, 2012 06:52PM) (new)

Greyweather | 231 comments Spin is not any of these things. It's set in our future not an alternate present or past.

I've already nominated, but if people need ideas, someone else could nominate Paratime! Collected Paratime Stories by H. Beam Piper. If people can't find the book, all of the stories in it are available at Project Gutenberg.

I thought about nominating it, so I'll second it. I think it's the "Heinleiniest" of all his novels, in both the best and worst ways.

message 15: by carol. (new)

carol. | 256 comments Well, if Spin doesn't work because it is a potential--but futuristic--timeline (to me, that means alternate), how about The Death of Grass? Very early sci-fi post-apocalyptic.

message 16: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments I was definitely thinking more alternate universe not just alt timeline. I purposely didn't choose alt history as I feel we've done enough of those lately. I was unsure on Spin as I didn't know enough about it. I'm not sure The Death of Grass fits the theme either.

message 17: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 331 comments What about The Long Earth? The whole premise is a chain of alternative Earths.

That fits the bill and I'll second it.

I second this nomination - it's already on my shelve.
