For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling

He has his memory erased, he can only remember his name. A challenge he has faced in the book so far is that he is trying to figure out what is going on. He wants to find out more about the the Glade but doesn't remember anything or what is going on. "I...uh...want some answers". This quote shows that Thomas has absolutely no idea what is going on and he wants some answers about what is going on. He is trying to figure out what he is doing there. Wesley | 50 comments In Koushun Takami fictional novel, Battle Royale, Shuya's challenge is to survive. He is a a junior high school student whose class has been chosen to be in the Program. The program is like the hunger games, a class goes into the wild and kills each other. People say Suzanne Collins wrote the hunger games based on this novel but not as much gore in it. It is very interesting to read though. " I can't believe we have to kill each other." This quote shows how Shuya needs to survive in this "game". With 40 kids in total, there is a high chance of being killed. Therefore they need to learn how to survive in the program.

Jamilah B | 37 comments Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

In the realistic fiction novel, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the challenge that my protagonist Melinda is facing is being laughed at and disrespected by her peers, and having the inability to speak about her problems and feelings, which made her unable to speak at all. "A guy behind me unwraps is breakfast and shoots the wrapper at the back of my head"(3). This quote shows that Melinda is being disrespected. A quote that shows that Melinda gets laughed at is, "Thwap! A lump of potatoes and gravy hits me square in the center of my chest. All conversation stops as the entire lunchroom gawks....."(8). This quote shows that Melinda got laughed at when she got hit with her lunch instead of being helped. Therefore the challenge that Melinda faces is being disrespected and laughed by her peers.

Andy Chen | 44 comments In Rick Riordan's fantasy novel, The Sea of Monsters, the biggest challenge Percy Jackson has faced was to fight Lord Kronos. Percy is a 16 year-old half-blood that lives in Camp Half-Blood and was the Chosen One. Because he is the chosen one, Percy must face Kronos with no one else but him. Percy lead the half-bloods to Mount Olympus, and he must carry on to the 600th floor of the Empire State Building, to finally face his biggest nightmare. Chiron once stated, "You are the Chosen One and must lead the immortals to help defend Mt. Olympus from Kronos and his titans. Percy, you must stop Kronos once and for all, on your own. Beware of his tricks, Percy. Do the best you can to stop him, and from destroying this
world." This quote shows this is Percy's biggest challenge because Kronos was always after him since he came to Camp the first time. Percy has fought Kronos several times, and will not stop until he gets to rule each and every one of the Gods, Godesses, mortals and immortals around the universe. Percy was the leader and captain, and was the only half-blood that had the power to stop Kronos. This was Percy's biggest fear because he said that he was going to do this for the Gods, Goddesses and the half-bloods. If Percy loses, it was going to be the end of the world.

The slaves always have to work all day long and they have no breaks. They would get punish if they didnt do work. "One time Master Tobias beat up a group of slaves because they stopped working," This quotes means that slaves had to work hard in order for them to not be sold or get punished. 47 had seen people getting punished before and he didnt like that. Therefore, 47 biggest challage was being a slave.

Sydney Mok (SydneyMok) | 43 comments In the novel The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, the protagonist's biggest challenge is finding out who killed the pluto dog Wellington who belonged to his neighbor Mrs. Shears. He starts by asking his neighbors. Chris, a 15 year old boy, found Wellington dead in the middle of Mrs. SHear's lawn at night and was stabbed with a gardening fork. He is trying to figure out who killed Wellington but when the police came, he got mad and hit the police and ended up in jail and fro this, they think that Chris killed Wellington. Since Chris is a person who probably will think is weird because he knows all the prime numbers, knows all the countries and captals, and has this issue with strangers. Since he is that sort of person, he says "Talking to strangers is not something I usually do. I do not like talking to strangers" (34). This quote shows that since he is trying to solve the mystery of who killed Wellington, he has to ask his neighbors if they saw anything stranger but some of his neighbors he doesn't know well. He wants to find out who killed Wellington so he is willing to talk to strangers and ask them questions. Therefore, the biggest challenge Chris faces is solving the mystery by asking his neighbors.

Altamir III III (longdeoking) | 27 comments In Sharon M. Draper realistic fiction novel, Tears of a Tiger, a challenge that my protagonist is facing is that he had suffered in a car accident and his best friend Robbie has died. What started off was by Andy,(protagonist)a 17 year old boy who was playing for his school (Hazelwood High) basketball team and they had just won a big won game. So because they were so happy, Andy and his friends in his teams went to celebrate. So then went Andy, Tyrone, B.J, and Robbie (Robbie is the smartest and most talented on the team, Tyrone is a good friend and B.J is also a random friend from we don't know why they are friends)went out to drink. They tried to invite Gerald but he couldn't go. So they got a six pack of beer and went out. Next thing you know, everybody except B.J who doesn't drink got dizzy. Right after that, they slam the car onto the wall. B.J and Tyrone were the first out. They helped out Andy get out the car but Robbie was in a complicated position. Since he was so big, his legs got stuck on the wind shield and they saw that it would have been difficult time to take him out. So then B.J went on the hood of the car and tried to help out Robbie to leave the car but then the next thing you knew, there was fire all over the car. Robbie was crying out for help and pleading to not die like this, but sadly, that's exactly what happened. Robbie Washington, 17 years old died in a car accident with Andy Jackson driving the car,and Tyrone and B.J Carson at the back seats were part of this tragedy. They were in newspapers, police office, news, everywhere, and not just for that but everybody was crying for Robbie's death. Now the challenge that Andy is facing is that Andy's feels guilty for all of this, always punishing himself for this, and getting a paper taped on his locker saying the word "killer". That made him mad and sad. He goes to Health Clinic for alcohol rehabilitation every Saturdays starting at 6 am until 6 pm. Not just that but he has to visit the Psychologist. Now a quote that shows that he is feeling guilty for this is when the psychologist asks Andy how does he fell after the accident, and Andy replies "I feel like a piece of crap, `cause its all my fault that Robbie died because I was drinking and driving"(43). This quote shows just like I have explained up before the quote, he feels guilty of all of this and it wont get that out of his head. Not just this but this may taunt him for a long time period. And so for that he is at this psychologist thing and all. In conclusion, the biggest challenge for Andy was the car accident that his best friend Robbie has burned to death.

Zoe | 25 comments In Christopher Paolini's fantasy novel Eldest, Eragon's biggest challenge would probably be helping to protect the Varden and Hrothgar, the dwarf king, allowing him to rule the dwarves. In the beginning of the book, some Urgals break into Tronjheim(where the Varden live) and killed Ajihad, the leader of the Varden. After that, Ajihad's daughter, Nasuada, became the new leader, but the Varden are afraid that the Urgals will come back and kill Nasuada. Since Eragon is now part of the Varden, he has to protect them. Eragon has a big responsibility though, because he is a Dragon Rider, and he is supposed to look out for the Urgals. He is then sent to meet Hrothgar, and is told that he can be the new king if he wanted to. Eragon decides to say yes, because he doesn't want to risk insulting Hrothgar by saying no. Orik tells Eragon, "And with it Hrothgar extends an offer adopt you as a member of his own family"(78). This shows that this is Eragon's biggest challenge, because it is complicated to protect the Varden and be the Dwarf's king at the same time.

Kenjo | 41 comments In Ian o'Connor's biography, The Journey Of Derek Jeter, the biggest challenge Derek Jeter faced was going through the process of playing for the New York Yankees. Derek Jeter grew up as a huge fan of the Yankees. He hung posters around his room of the Yankees and went to many games as well. Right before he was informed of going to the big leagues, Jeter thought he was done. He had heard rumors of him getting traded to the Marlins and thought he had finally been dealt with. But the knock on the door was a different story. His manager Bill Evers said to him, "Congratulations, you're going to the big leagues." This quote proves that working towards playing for the Yankees was the biggest challenge for Jeter because he was struggling playing for the Greensboro Hornets and his struggles had led him to thinking of giving up and just playing basketball instead. But his work and effort was noticed and he was finally wearing the number 2 jersey on the field for the New York Yankees.

Elizabeth Sanchez | 14 comments In the Novel Sticks and Stones by Beth Gooble the biggest challenge Jujube faced was the process of getting the school to stop letting students bully other students. In this novel Jujube is fighting to stop bullying in her school, one of the things that mainly motivates her is the fact that she was one of the many suspects of bullying. "It's just a word, but it still takes away my choices-what I can wear, how I can walk, even how I think about myself." This quote shows the struggle that Jujube has thought about everyday because of others criticisms. It also shows that the biggest challenge was facing her self as well. She just needed to realize if what people said about her was really true, and though it all really mattered it was about to her to fight on.
