I'm not sure what it is, but I've always been completely fascinated with epic struggles and apocalyptic scenarios. Ever since I was a kid, every time a new book or movie on the subject would come out, I'd be there drooling with anticipation. "Planet of the Apes," and "The Omega Man," made Charlton Heston my hero as a kid (I realize I just dated myself, lol).
Now don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy seeing people suffer. I've been glued to the TV this week watching the effects of Superstorm Sandy and my heart breaks for everyone affected by it. I think it may be the fascination with the human response to tragedy and horrific situations that I love to explore through the written word and film.
I'm also a zombie nut. Watching "Night of the Living Dead," as a kid, all alone in my room, cemented that fascination. There is nothing more terrifying than the thought of being chased down by a living corpse, consumed with lust for flesh and ultimate violence. I think zombies were the original Terminators.
For anyone that enjoys these types of books or films, I hope you will consider reading the "Mace of the Apocalypse," series. It is the Apocalypse at its most twisted. Not only do you have "the infected," but the heroes in the story are faced with a troubling dilemma: Those who become infected after receiving the antidote struggle with some powerful and seductive side-effects. So strong, in fact, that a teenage gang deliberately infect themselves to embrace the power, making them very unstable and dangerous.
In a world with no rules and no restrictions, what would you do? Do you even know? How could you?
