Maryam Alremeithi I'm aware that there's a movie called "Gone with the wind". But I've been told that the book is way more amazing than the movie. If you read this book, please give me your opinion.

Komal Yes, I've read it, like 5 times already. Its one of my favorites. The book is awesome. I'd suggest you give it a try!

message 3: by Maryam (new)

Maryam Alremeithi Thank you! <3 I'll definitely read it then!

Holly My suggestion....watch the movie first. The book is always better than the movie.....if you read the book first the movie will be a disappointment, but if you watch the movie first you will enjoy it and then be amazed by the details in the book.

Maryam Alremeithi Thank you Holly for your suggestion, I'll watch the movie on Friday.

Ellen This was the first "grown-up" novel I ever read. And it is one of only two books that I've read twice. I, too, recommend it. Well-developed characters.

Cynthia This is honestly one of my most favorite books. I managed to tolerate the whole history facts because I was more focused on the romance. Be aware that you might not like Scarlett O'Hara, not much people do and I had a friend who actually stopped reading it because she wasn't fond of the main character but I LOVED her! The form in which it was written is flawless. There are racist remarks within the book but I honestly like the fact that Mitchell didn't sugar coat the Southern lifestyle of the 1800's. This is a book everyone should at least attempt to read because it talks a lot about growing up and facing reality. Quite honestly, I disliked the movie greatly. I bared with it because it was based on the book but Scarlett O'Hara's character in the movie was a bit off, well at least I perceived it that way. I'm glad I read the book before I saw the movie. While reading the book, I saw bits of the movie to have a better understanding which helped. I recommend this book to A LOT of people which is insane. Again, most enjoy it but few dislike it and it really has to do on how well you like the characters or the format of the book! I plan to read this book many more times.

Carina I read the book then saw the film. I do think the book is a lot better, but I wouldn't necessarily say to see the film first because it will spoil a number of events.

As a previous poster has said this book does not sugar coat things so be aware of that as well - but do keep with it as this is an excellent book!

Catherine Wolffe There's a reason so many copies of this book have been sold. It's one of the greatest books ever written. I think you'll love the movie as well - a condensed version of the book with slight variations. Still, the book is remarkable. Margaret Mitchell pens characters that can't be contained in the pages of her work. They simply had to be shared with the world. You'll always remember this one. It's truly a gift for any library.

Victoria Pinder I have a yearly watching of GWTW as it's the number one grossing movie of all time when you factor out inflation and use real numbers. First ever color movie (though that honor should go to the Wizard of Oz despite the stylistic choice of black and white at the beginning and end of the film.) And I've read GWTW a few times as well.

For a movie from a book, we can all hope to have such an amazing translation onto the big screen. Margaret Mitchell was involved with the script, herself.

There are differences and a few children are cut as well as what happens to the sisters. The tone and plot of the book are magnificently transferred to film. Those who love the movie will not be disappointed with the book, and those who read the book have no reason to complain either. Over all an American classic that to me should be on the must be read lists. If you've not read it, buy the book and rent the movie. It will transport you to Scarlett's world.

If you are into what the author's point, she intended Scarlett to represent the all American female. The girl has issues, but I understand every choice made and why. I love and adore GWTW.

Bailey I love this book, it's one of my favorites. I recomend that you watch the movie first and make sure you have enough time to read the book it took me about a month and i'm a fast reader.

Jade I am always telling my friend to read this book, but she is put off by the size. Although it is a long book, it shouldn't take month to read, unless you are really busy. The book is so well written and absorbing the pages just fly by. A book a love to read and reread simply because it always reminds of strong women can be, and there are a lot of life lessons to be learned in there.

Also, its one of the books i elected to take with me half way across the world when i left for uni. thats how good it is, i also started rereading it again at the airport waiting for the plane

Jennifer Morefield I loved the book. Well worth reading. It does not seem like a nearly 1500 page book. It flies by because it is so engrossing. It is a bit dated, but it is oh so wonderful. It is my mother's favorite book. I read it last year, and I am so glad that I did!

Diana I, also, loved the book. It looks like it would take forever to read because of the length, but it doesn't; it's such a page turner. I read it while on vacation one summer, and I couldn't put it down; I read it while we were driving to our destination, and while we were at the beach. Definately worth the read.

Dollie I've read Gone With The Wind three times. It's a great book. I loved the movie, but the book is better. Read it, you'll like it.

Michael Bowler I read it years ago, in high school, but thought it was great back then.

chinami Its the best book i ever read.Do read it :P

Regina Cox Fantastic book. A must read for anyone who loves both reading and history.

message 19: by Neha (new) - rated it 5 stars

Neha One of my favorite books. <3

Susan The book is excellent and one of my favorites. The movie is also good, but, of course, much of the book had to be shortened because of its length. It is best to read the book first and then see the movie, and have your mind fill in the parts the movie left out.

Tialisa I saw the movie then read the book, then I wondered how I ever followed the movie. The movie leaves out so many great characters including Scarlett's children. You will love it!

Kimberly As an Atlanta native, I read GWTW the first time at age 14 and again every summer until I started college. Scarlett is intriguing, but I kept reading for Rhett. What a man! If you enjoyed GWTW I'll recommend Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig. Same story but told from Rhett's point of view. It's an incredible read!

Chanda I have read this book and I am not a huge reader. I like to read when I can find "that special book". This is one of those books. I was intimidated at first because of the 1400 pages but it was well worth the read.

Missy Amazing book! I always thought the movie was fantastic, but the book is way better!!

Melissa Embry I'd read it years ago, decided it was hopelessly racist, then read a biography of Mitchell & was amazed at the depth of research she & her husband put into it.

message 26: by Lis (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lis GWTW is one of my favourite books and I always enjoy watching the film too. It really one of those books that everyone should read, a classic. The length of the book is not a problem as it is so well written and so absorbing that you will be amazed how the chapters pass and you will be sorry when you come to the end, as with all good stories. I envy you Maryamk514 being about to read GWTW for the first time.

message 27: by Joy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joy Pierce I read this several years ago. It moved REALLY slow for me. BUT, I loved the story and characters. I have always loved the movie, but the book is a little different in some ways. It's worth reading if you have the time.

Caprice I read this several years ago, but listened to it on Audible just recently. I like the book better than the movie because it develops Scarlett's (and others) character(s) on a deeper level.

Susan Morgan Read the book. It is great. I was about 14 when i first read it and thought it was wonderful. I would read the book first. The movie was great as well and you don't want the movie to ruin any surprises the book might have. It really is a must read. Long but wonderful.

Adriana Everyone has already mentioned that the book is better than the movie (which is the case in most instances) but I would recommend watching the movie first.
A lot of things were changed or removed, but the overall plot remains the same. It is an excellent movie, with great acting and some amazing set and costume design. It is one of those movies you HAVE to watch if you want to call yourself a movie lover.
Also, watching the movie might help you decide if it's a story that will interest you without committing yourself to a very long read.
That said, I adored the book. The first time I read it, it was a marathon reading weekend where I even got in trouble for trying to read during a family dinner. As Cynthia mentioned in her comment, Scarlett O'Hara is not a very likable character, but she’s a survivor and a by-product of her society that has to learn and adapt when her world falls apart. Following that journey is an amazing read.

Joslynn Definitely read the book first. It's an amazing book! I read the book a few years ago for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised how great it was. Couldn't put it down. Scarlett is such a great character. You will love and hate her. Happy reading!!

Donna I have read the book many times and I love it! The history and the characters are amazing, yes even Scarlett! There is no sugar coating in the book and I think that helps you to get the feel of what it was like during that time. The movie is also amazing and you will need tissues for both! Hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Paula I read it every year; it is one of the most amazing books! The movie is fun to, but the book should be read!

Shereen كتاب جميل جداااا ارئه اكثر من مره لاني استشعر فيه زمن جميل

Cindy Best book EVER - best movie ever too. Just a great story of human passion. I highly recommend you read the book first. Movie next.

Mo I can remember reading this when I was in high school. I would read deep into the night, under my covers with a flashlight, so as not to disturb my sister. I could not bear to put it down, and finished it in less than a week. It absolutely consumed me.

The movie is one of the very few that lives up to the book. Even though it was necessary to leave out entire parts of the book, the parts they kept in were extremely well done.

I envy you the pleasure you have in store for yourself. I recommend book first, then movie.

Shahrazad The most Amazing book i've ever read it's definitely better than the film u should read GWTW or else don't read anything

Sarah Oh my. I read this while I was in college and I thought it was amazing.

Danielle Greta wrote: "I have a yearly watching of GWTW as it's the number one grossing movie of all time when you factor out inflation and use real numbers. First ever color movie (though that honor should go to the Wiz..."

well said. This is my favorite film and book. I watched the movie numerous times before i was old enough to read the book. Which was fantastic, I actually own a first edition.

Lucinda Stanford I can't BELIEVE there is anyone who hs NOY read gwtw!! One of he best books ever written! I've probably read it at leas 3 times since my teenage years. READ THE BOOK FIRST!!! Movie is wonderful, too! Do NOY bother reading "Scarlett", which was a sequel. IT SUCKED!!

Kevin-Abandoned Myers-Abandoned If you read it, you will not be sorry that you did.

Brenda My all time favorite book -- I personally liked Scarlett also, but not as much as the original.

Jaime I have read this book once and found it a deeper story than the average movie. The book reveals much more about Scarlet.

The book is better than the movie and well worth reading. You will be spellbound from the first word to the end.

Paula Hiatt I actually wrote my master's thesis on GWTW and found it to be an interesting blend of history and Old South mythology. I think it really reveals more about southern women of the 1920's, when it was actually written, than it does about women of the Civil War. The movie is pretty different, more romantic myth and even less history. There's a lot to learn here.

Melissa A must read. I LOVED it, and I HATED it! The characters, story, and history are unforgettable, but I wanted to throw the book across the room when I finished it! I was disappointed. But when I had a few days to reflect on the story and what it was truly about, I became a fan. I want to re-read this book at a slower pace to really take it all in. It's an undertaking, but well worth every HOUR you invest!

Dennis read it. I went years wanting to read it, never quite getting to it. Never saw the movie either. Saw that as well. read it first, then see the movie Don't wait like I did. I agree,Its well worth the energy you invest

Nannette I honestly can't remember how old I was when I read this book, likely late teens after seeing the movie. I adored it, Ashley is a sad and weak character one you'll either completely dislike or just see as weak and unworthy of Scarlet's affection, Rhett is brash, bawdy and completely smitten with Scarlet to the point of losing himself in her...almost. Scarlet is a complex character, to be loved, to be hated, to be admired, to be admonished...but she grows on you, Basically she's a brat who goes through a lot and makes a lot of big mistakes and lives to regret them. I also read the 'sequel', and in all reality while I liked seeing an aftermath for the characters, I could have left them where Margaret Mitchell did.

Tracey Richardson Yes, I've read it about 8 times. I loved it that much. I could not get it out of my head. So much so that I wrote a fan fiction sequel, never to be published of course because of copyright infringements, but I think it is very good.

Sophie Its an amazing book and movie. I remember reading the book when i was about 15 years old and watching the movie when i was even younger. It still is one of my favorite books and i have even named my daughter Scarlett.
