I think we're meant to make our own conclusions on what happens to these characters. I think the book was more about The List and how it affected the girls on it more than the girls themselves (if that makes any sense). I think that's why some questions are left unanswered.
As for the crown being plastic, I think that was Margo realizing that being homecoming queen wasn't what she thought it would be. Margo assumes that the crown will be made of metal - something tangible, something strong, something valuable. But it isn't, it's plastic. So it's probably cheap, and therefore it probably isn't even all that special. Plastic sometimes seems to have a negative connotation (such as calling someone plastic is considered an insult), which makes me think that Margo feels that way about the crown and the title in the end. She thought it would be special, that it would make her feel/be special but it doesn't - not really anyways.
I could be wrong. But that was the feeling I got at the end.
