Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Mmmm, that roast beef sounds delicious, Becky.

Snow is falling hard here. My sister decided not to go to Sunday mass because of the weather. So we're cozy here, waiting for the Oscars tonight. Eddie is making breakfast for us... scrambled eggs and bacon.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I had to look up "challah bread". I found the answer at the Wiki website: ====>

I love any kind of French toast.

Nina | 6069 comments To all of you who have been looking out at SNOW, I am envious. We have had the least snow on record this winter. Some places around here have had two inches and some a quarter of an inch. we never had enough to shovel.I hate ice storms which we do have sometimes and I never miss them. But some meals are made to be eaten on a snowy day; like roast beef or chili or ham and bean soup. stay warm and dry. nina

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I am currently reading, "Bridge of Sighs," by Richard Russo and am so far enjoying the story. The setting is in your neck of the woods, so to speak; the Cayouga(spellling?) River and upstate NY so thought you might like to check it out. It's our book club selection of this month. I will let you know when I finish if I still recommend it. nina ps my quote of the day: "Mentor" was the name of a trusted friend and advisor of Ulysses. Thus mentor has come to mean a trusted and respected friend.

Don't be envious, Nina. It's true that snow has its charms, but there are some charms we can live without. (g) If snow can be a good thing, than I must say that we, here in Glens Falls, have had too much of a good thing.

Nina, thanks for the recommendation. I've been wanting to read another of Richard Russo's books ever since I read his _Nobody's Fool_. I did try reading his book, _Mohawk_, but couldn't get into it. I think I'll put his Bridge of Sighs and his Empire Falls on my To-Read list.

Nina | 6069 comments I am continuing the saga of my courtship: After our two chance meetings in most unlikely places my husband to be; Don, came badk to see me on leave a couple of times before he was shipped out to Houston to attend Rice University. We did correspond for a few months before things went adrift. He said he was joining the submarines and I stopped writing as did he. Along came Christmas of that year and his best buddy in the Navy wrote to my girl friend who he almost never had written to and told her Don was still in HOuston and not in the submarine. I sent him a Christmas card and just signed it < "HA!" He wrote back and we started writing to each other again. Almost a year had gone by since we first met. In the meantime I had gotten quite ill with some disease of the nerve endings and was hospitalized for three months and told I probably would never walk again. Upon hearing this Don wrote a very nice letter to me. Then a miracle occured as a young dr from Mexico looked at my case and suggested quinine. I started getting better immediately. Don called and said he was out of the Navy and back home in Milwaukee and would like to come see me that summer. I said that would be fine. But, my parents then decided because I had been so ill I should go live with my aunt in CA to avoid the cold weather here. So, here comes Don to see me and I'm not here. I did tell him I wasn't gong to be here but he came to visit my parents. I started college again in CA and met a nice young man who I was very fond of but then I became homesick so I did come back for Christmas vacation and down came my husband to be from Milwaukee on his vacation from Marquette University. I didn't go back to CA. I saw him at Easter and was a bridesmaid at his sister's wedding in MIlwaukee the following summer..We then deiceded to marry on his Thanksgiving vacation here in KC. He drove through a blizzard to get here and because it had been over three months since I had seen him I got cold feet(LWell it was NOvember) and the night before the wedding in front of future in laws, my parents and friends I said, "I changed my mind; I am not getting married." I went upstairs to my room. Sometime later I changed my mind again and was really married about two an a half years after we'd first met. And we have been married for sixty one years and have had six children and eightteen grandchildren and I wish I coud say we could be celebrating our anniversaries forever. Maybe we will....nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's a beautiful story, Nina. After all those near misses, it looks as if you and Don were really meant for each other. Congratulations on your 61 years of marriage. Not many people are lucky enough to reach that stage. You have been blessed.

I'm still wondering why you almost changed your mind about getting married. Aren't you glad you didn't! :)

message 12: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, I am so glad I changed my mind back and forth and stayed with the forth. Unlike cell phones etc I was quite ready to be married when we parted in August and were making arrangements for the marriage in November but we hardly communicated during that time; no phone calls and just a few letters so suddenly it seemed so strange and now it's a bit hard to explain. I guess I wondered if he really wanted to get married. Of course, as I said he drove through a blizzard to get here. My mother came to my room after my announcement and said, "If you don't want to get married, you don't have to do it." I thought that was brave as she would have all the explaining the next morning etc. Then my father came up to my room and said, "Well, he is a nice boy." And that's when I decided, "Well, yes, he IS!" and looking back I was only twenty. But as I said once we look at romantic stories on tv or DVD and think of course all that is possible, look at US... I didn't hardly eat for a week when my Irish setter died so I hope I don't die of starvation if he goes first as so many in the family depend on me..nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I think both your parents gave you good advice. And it certainly has worked out for you.

I remember when I wanted to quit college in my junior year. My dad gave me some good advice which helped me to stay on in school and earn my degree. We look back now and see those times as milestones.

My BIL also gave me good advice as to what courses to take toward my degree and my career. His advice turned out to be invaluable.

There's a book entitled _The Right Words at the Right Time_ by Marlo Thomas. I found it fascinating to read how the wise words of others can guide us down the right paths in life.
