finished 2/18
★★★★
Lucy has always loved covering the annual Easter egg hunt for the Pennysaver. Hosted by elderly socialite Vivian Van Vorst at Pine Point, her luxurious oceanfront estate, it’s a swanky event where the grown-ups sip cocktails while their children search for eggs that are as likely to contain savings bonds as they are jelly beans. But when Lucy arrives with her three-year-old grandson, VV’s normally welcoming gates are locked, and a man dressed as the Easter bunny emerges to drop dead moments later.

Lucy discovers that the victim is Van Vorst Duff, VV’s grandson, and soon learns that not all is as it seems at idyllic Pine Point, where the champagne and caviar seem to be running dry. Always a social butterfly, VV has been skipping lunch dates with friends, and much-needed donations to local charities have stopped with no explanation. Maybe she’s going senile, or maybe her heirs are getting a little too anxious to take over her estate.

As Lucy gathers a basketful of suspects, she’s convinced that someone’s been hunting for a lot more than eggs. And she’ll have to chase the truth down a rabbit hole before the killer claims another victim.

It is the summer of 1950 – and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”

Did the stranger die of poisoning? There was a piece missing from Mrs. Mullet’s custard pie, and none of the de Luces would have dared to eat the awful thing. Or could he have been killed by the family’s loyal handyman, Dogger… or by the Colonel himself! At that moment, Flavia commits herself to solving the crime – even if it means keeping information from the village police, in order to protect her family. But then her father confesses to the crime, for the same reason, and it’s up to Flavia to free him of suspicion. Only she has the ingenuity to follow the clues that reveal the victim’s identity, and a conspiracy that reaches back into the de Luces’ murky past.

But Mace's miserable love life pales as a problem next to a planted rattlesnake, a tent sliced to shreds, and a spooked horse named Shotgun. When Mama gallops into danger, Mace is determined to corral the killer stalking the Florida trail.

Judith McMonigle Flynn has vowed never ever to find a dead body again (at least not for a while). But despite warnings from Cousin Renie, she can't turn down a suspicious guest reservation from Mary Smith of New York City. There must be many real Mary Smiths, especially in a place as big as NYC.

Unfortunately, Judith already knows the woman who shows up at Hillside Manor. She's none other than Ruby Tooms, the world-weary barmaid the cousins met at Oktoberfest in Little Bavaria. Fearing that Judith wouldn't accept her reservation if she used her real name, Ruby arrives with some unexpected baggage—a cold case she dumps on Hillside Manor's Persian carpet. Ruby's mother was strangled after she divorced Jimmy Tooms, Ruby's father. Jimmy was in the clear, behind bars at the time for stealing Judith's wallet when Dan McMonigle's ill-fated Meat & Mingle Café went bust. Ruby wants to know if Judith can use her sleuthing skills to finger a murderer from fifteen years ago.

Judith is about to say no when her husband, Joe Flynn, tells her that the homicide case was his former partner and old pal Woody Price's first murder investigation. Now the game is afoot, and for once Joe is more than willing to help his wife turn a cold case into a hot chase in pursuit of a long-ago killer.

★★★
WHEN IRISH EYES ARE LYIN'...Emily Andrew is earning some much-needed green by navigating the twisting roads of Ireland with a group of seniors, including her beloved Nana. But once the hearty troupe from Iowa lands on Irish sod, trouble starts brewing: there's a death-defying incident with a horse-drawn carriage . . . and a gender-bending encounter with Emily's ex-husband Jack, now known as Jackie. No wonder Emily has come down with a smarting case of hives.

The plot thickens like Irish stew when the group settles into Ballybantry Castle, where a ghost is said to wander the halls. But it's no blarney when a very real corpse turns up in one of the guest rooms. While the murderous malarkey has Emily step-dancing as fast as she can, one sure thing emerges from the mists: not even St. Paddy himself could drive out the spiteful serpent that slithers among them.

Landscaping is Nina Quinn's business, but trouble seems to be her middle name. Saddled with a recently expelled, faithless local-cop husband, a teenaged terror of a stepson, and the yappiest, most unhousebreakable Chihuahua in captivity, Nina needs a respite – and the backyard makeover she's undertaking for her sister Maria and Nate, Maria's fiancé, may do the trick.

But, of course, Nate vanishes mysteriously, and Nina's gardening magic inadvertently turns up a corpse. And with a thief on the prowl who's preying on the neighborhood elderly, a suspicious Pandora's Box of a package arriving on her doorstep, and yet another body inconveniently turning up, Nina's going to have to dig into her community's dirtiest little secrets to regain her peace and sanity – if she can manage to stay alive long enough to enjoy it.

The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce #2), by Alan Bradley
finished 7/29
★★★★
Flavia de Luce is a dangerously brilliant eleven-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders. This time, Flavia finds herself untangling two deaths—separated by time but linked by the unlikeliest of threads.

Flavia thinks that her days of crime-solving in the bucolic English hamlet of Bishop’s Lacy are over – and then Rupert Porson has an unfortunate rendezvous with electricity. The beloved puppeteer has had his own strings sizzled, but who’d do such a thing and why? For Flavia, the questions are intriguing enough to make her put aside her chemistry experiments and schemes of vengeance against her insufferable big sisters. Astride Gladys, her trusty bicycle, Flavia sets out from the de Luces’ crumbling family mansion in search of Bishop’s Lacey’s deadliest secrets.

Does the madwoman who lives in Gibbet Wood know more than she’s letting on? What of the vicar’s odd ministrations to the catatonic woman in the dovecote? Then there’s a German pilot obsessed with the Brontë sisters, a reproachful spinster aunt, and even a box of poisoned chocolates. Most troubling of all is Porson’s assistant, the charming but erratic Nialla. All clues point toward a suspicious death years earlier and a case the local constables can’t solve – without Flavia’s help. But in getting so close to who’s secretly pulling the strings of this dance of death, has our precocious heroine finally gotten in way over her head?

The Red House Mystery, by A. A. Milne
finished 8/6
★★★
Far from the gentle slopes of the Hundred Acre Wood lies the Red House, the setting for A. A. Milne’s only detective story, where secret passages, uninvited guests, a sinister valet, and a puzzling murder lay the foundations for a classic crime caper. When the local police prove baffled, it is up to a guest at a local inn to appoint himself "Sherlock Holmes" and, together with his friend and loyal "Watson," delve deeper into the mysteries of the dead man. This classic example of Golden Age crime writing is a lost gem from a time before Tigger and a perfectly crafted whodunit with witty dialogue, deft plotting, and a most curious cast of characters.

London's Plumtree Press has a world-class bestseller of a novel. And the sequel is earmarked to get this old family firm out of the red. But its anonymous author, known to Plumtree only as "Arthur," has apparently vanished, leaving the crucial last five chapters undelivered. Alex already knows they reveal the identity of the characters who smuggled British children to America during World War II. But, of course, this is fiction. So when a lead critic previews the book as a nonfiction exposé, Alex is shocked. Even more so when the critic is murdered...and Alex finds himself the target of a ruthless hunt for the manuscript and bizarre attempts on his life. Ducking newshounds, government officials, and the sniping of jealous publishers, Alex knows only one thing: If he can't find Arthur and untangle the truth, his next season's list may be a posthumous one.

★★★★
Goldy Schulz knows her food is to die for, but she never expects one of her best friends to actually keel over when she's leaving a birthday party Goldy has catered. At first, everyone assumes that all the fun and excitement of the party, not to mention the rich fare, did her in. But what looks like a coronary turns out to be a generous serving of cold-blooded murder. And the clever culprit is just getting cooking. When a colleague—a woman who resembles Goldy—is stabbed, and Goldy is attacked outside her house, it becomes clear that the popular caterer is the main course on a killer menu. With time running out, Goldy must roll up her sleeves, sharpen her knives, and make a meal out of a devious murderer, before that killer can serve her up cold.

Death on Demand (Death on Demand #1), by Carolyn Hart

★★★
At Annie Laurance's Death On Demand bookstore on Broward's Rock Island, South Carolina, murder most foul suddenly isn't confined to the well-stocked shelves. Author Elliot Morgan's abrupt demise during a weekly gathering of famous mystery writers called the Sunday Night Regulars is proof positive that a bloody sword is sometimes mightier than a brilliant pen. With Annie in the unenviable position of primary police suspect, the pretty young mystery maven and her wealthy paramour, Max Darling, embark on an investigation into a classic locked-room mystery with high stakes. For failing to unmask a brutal and ingenious killer could mean prison for Ms. Laurance. While success could mean her death.

Truly, Madly (Lucy Valentine #1), by Heather Webber
finished 10/7
★★★★
Lucy Valentine is as smart as can be, as single as you can get, and so not qualified to run a matchmaking service. But when her parents temporarily step down from the family business, Valentine, Inc., it’s Lucy’s turn to step up and help out—in the name of love.

Plus, her rent is due.

Here’s the problem: Lucy doesn’t have the knack for matchmaking. According to family legend, every Valentine has been blessed by Cupid with the ability to read “auras” and pair up perfect couples. But not Lucy. Her skills were zapped away years ago in an electrical surge, and now all she can do is find lost objects. What good is that in the matchmaking world? You’d be surprised. In a city like Boston, everyone’s looking for something. So when Lucy locates a missing wedding ring—on a dead body—she asks the sexy private eye who lives upstairs to help her solve the perfect crime. And who knows? Maybe she’ll find the perfect love while she’s at it…

If You Can't Stand the Heat (Poppy Markham #1), by Robin Allen
finished 10/11
★★★★
Poppy Markham practically grew up at the family restaurant in Austin, Texas, and, until recently, worked as a sous chef under her surly stepsister, Ursula. Poppy's not sure if her dad will ever forgive her for leaving the family business to become a public health inspector-the most reviled figure in the restaurant industry-but when he asks her back into the kitchen to help out during the restaurant's grand re-opening, she can't refuse. Chaos ensues when the guest of honor, Michelin-rated chef Évariste Bontecou, is found stabbed to death with Ursula's knife. Sacrebleu!
Sorting through everyone who had it in for the hot-headed, philandering French chef is worse than deboning a Coho salmon. Could it be the bad-boy sous chef eyeing his chance at the top or the conniving waitress rumored to be Évariste's paramour du jour? The closer Poppy gets to solving the mystery, the hotter things get. And as everyone knows: if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

★★.5
Amy Hobbes never expected to solve anything more than a crossword puzzle. When she left her job as a journalist in Southern California, she planned to give the adrenaline a rest. But she needed a job when her husband announced a move to Chicago with his pregnant girlfriend. A meeting with the local newspaper publisher netted her an offer to be the Managing Editor.

She relies on her friend and police reporter, Clarice Stamms, for support and stories. After a respected Senator and World War II hero dies and two more people turn up dead, the news heats up. Both victims had ties to a hotel owned by the Senator’s family. Research into the family uncovers a shadowy figure, also a World War II veteran, linked to the Senator. The third victim at the hotel is a surprise. It’s a cousin of the current owner—and grandson of the Senator—who’s fallen, or been pushed, from the attic. Visiting the hotel, Amy and a friend meet an urbane European, a Holocaust survivor who’s spent sixty years tracking down Nazi loot. Amy learns that three people have just died to keep the secret of a stolen da Vinci drawing.

Barb Happy Thanksgiving to you! We'll celebrate ours in about six weeks :)

I suspect my 3-star rating for Death on Demand is simply due to the first-in-the-series issue, but I won't know for sure until I read the next book :)

Christmas Carol Murder (Lucy Stone #20), by Leslie Meier
finished 10/15
★★★★
It's Christmas in Tinker's Cove, Maine, and Lucy Stone is excited about her acting debut in the town's production of A Christmas Carol. But a real life Scrooge has everyone feeling frosty, and with a murderer on the loose, Lucy will have to unwrap her sleuthing skills faster than she can say, "Bah! Humbug!"

Lucy normally loves planning for the holidays, but this year, Tinker's Cove has fallen on hard times. With so many residents struggling to make ends meet, Christmas festivities are a luxury some can't afford. But the story's not so bleak at Downeast Mortgage, whose tightfisted owners, Jake Marlowe and Ben Scribner, are raking in profits from everyone's misfortune. Half the town is in their debt, so when the miserly Marlowe is murdered, the mourners are few and the suspects are many. . .

It's hard to feel merry amidst all the yuletide chaos. Between her reporting duties at the Pennysaver and nightly rehearsals for the Christmas play, Lucy hardly has time to search for a killer--especially one whose victim left behind so many possible culprits. Scribner believes Marlowe's ghost has come to warn him of his own impending demise, and when he starts receiving death threats, Lucy wonders if there's more to the omen than the ravings of a bitter old pinchpenny. . . Can Lucy solve the case and deck the halls before the killer strikes again? In a season of giving, receiving a deadly Christmas present is definitely not what Lucy had on her wish list this year.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) I wondered about Ali Brandon's series. Three stars eh? I love Alice Kimberly's!

message 30: by Barb (new)

Barb The first one in the Ali Brandon series wasn't great, but it wasn't awful either. This one, the second, was better -- probably more like 3.5 stars?

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) So the first was less good. I hem & haw about Ali Brandon because the protagonist isn't bonded with the cat. Also, as much as I adore critters I like well-written stories. Putting in a cat just to be cute or follow a trend wouldn't do.

I enjoyed Alice Kimberly's introductory volume so much, I am excited about the successors, which I own. Lovely discussing novels with you Barb. :)

Barb C. wrote: "So the first was less good. I hem & haw about Ali Brandon because the protagonist isn't bonded with the cat. Also, as much as I adore critters I like well-written stories. Putting in a cat just to be cute or follow a trend wouldn't do."

I suspect that the bond with the cat will grow as the series progresses. There were things in book #2 that helped in that regard :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) The main thing, is it one of these 'trying to be cute' trendy novels, or is it well-written?

message 34: by Barb (new)

Barb I don't think it's trying to be cute, the cat *is important to the story. I'm not the best judge of whether or not a story is well-written, but I didn't tear my hair out over grammatical/editing errors -- which happens a lot with some books!

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Well-written can mean impeccable grammar, which the world can use more of! But I also mean a great story in some way, that makes you interested to read it through. Despite 3 stars for volume 1. ;) If you found it creative/original/suspenseful.... you were willing to read volume 2 and liked it better so maybe it's worth buying.

message 36: by Barb (new)

Barb Yeah, I know, but I really don't pay attention to the writing itself when I read a book -- unless it's full of those grammatical errors :) If the story entertains me, if it makes me want to pick the book up again after I've had to stop reading, if (as you said) I want to read the next in the series, then I consider it to be well-written.

If you look at my Read shelf, you'll see that I'm *very stingy with stars in my ratings. I rarely give five stars to a book, although I would probably give a lot of 4-1/2 star ratings if I could.

message 37: by C. (Comment, never msg). (last edited Oct 27, 2013 10:44AM) (new)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Yes, that's it! Many of my reviews say I've been happily surprised by a genre or age-group I don't hang around. You can't go by identical gauges. Well-written means you were glad to read and continue further. I agree!

If you're a picky judge, I think you sold me on Ali Brandon. I just prefer someone who adores cats/animals automatically. To be hesitant about one with whom she lives? Not my kind of person.

message 38: by Barb (new)

Barb I don't think Darla, the main character, dislikes cats/animals in general, it's this particular cat -- she inherited the cat along with the bookstore, and it's a rather ... temperamental cat, so she has to learn how to get along with it. Due to some events in book #2, she's learning how to do that :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Temperamental.... I am 'mother' to seven. I understand a strong-willed mind. Heeheehee. They are all close to my fiancé & I, very involved in our life and affectionate. But opinionated! One is clawing for me to get off the PC right now.

Though doctors quickly announce the discovery of the neighbor child's cause of death, another child dies before they can declare victory over the illness, sending the community into a state of near panic. While trying to solve the mystery behind her own troubles, Stella begins to think she alone might hold the answers to the children's deaths.

Striking out on her own, afraid to trust anyone -- friends, neighbors, or the gorgeous stranger she's fallen for -- Stella must find her enemy before anyone else, including herself, ends up dead.

Death Overdue (Killer Librarian #2), by Mary Lou Kirwin
finished 12/3
★★★★
Spunky librarian Karen Nash is back in London and planning to open a bookstore with her beau, Caldwell Perkins, who owns a B&B. Unexpectedly, Sally, Caldwell’s tall, gorgeous, and blonde ex-girlfriend shows up—possibly to reclaim the B&B—and just maybe Caldwell, too. Sally’s current boyfriend, Alfredo, joins her, and they take a room.

That night, Karen is awakened by a horrible crash. Caldwell isn’t in bed with her. She rushes out to the hall to find him standing in the doorway of the inn’s library with a look of horror on his face. Inside the room all Karen can see is a woman’s hand sticking out from under a massive pile of pages and wood. While Sally’s death appears an accident, Karen finds it hard to believe. How did the heavy oak bookshelf topple over? Karen fears Sally has been murdered. The detective on the case comes to the same conclusion and decides Caldwell is the most likely suspect.

In order to save her boyfriend, Karen must figure out what Sally was looking for in the library and what Caldwell was doing up in the middle of the night. A story of intrigue and revenge, Death Overdue is a page-turning mystery featuring a loveable heroine who loves books almost as much as she loves her man.

Barb And I'm calling this one finished! This is one of my favorites, so I've already signed up again for 2014 :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Hi Barb! Per our discussion previously; animals understand everything we say without a doubt. It's a matter of whether they feel like obliging a request. haha Guess what? Folks will take a bit to find out but I added 3 new reading challenges to the community! :)

One for anything spiritual, paranormal; one for ANY mystery (all the cozy we do together, even author biographies & how-to's); one pair of word games from which to choose. I've been meaning to let Yvonne know. As I become a new hostess, I take what I learned from great ones like her. http://cmriedel.wordpress.com/riedel-...
