Q. My husband and I are expecting our first child, a girl, around Christmas. We thought nothing could sadden us during this happy time, but were shocked last week to hear that my husband's mother was taken from us in an auto accident. In his grief, my husband asked that we name our daughter after his late mother. The problem is that my mother in law's name was Olga, and I just can't fathom giving my child such a horrid name. I had been thinking something along the lines of Virginia or Lou Ann. I told my husband I would think about it, but he's pressing the issue, and I need to tell him something. Am I being selfish for not wanting to name my child Olga, even under these circumstances?

So you think Olga is bad....but you're OK with Virginia and Lou Ann??

Why not just saddle the baby with Mabel or Madge?

My thoughts exactly. Those are all awful names.

Well maybe Virginia isn't that bad, but it does have a touch of the old lady about it.

Yes, that's what middle names are for. Carrying on the family name, or a family name. That way, if necessary, you can "stash" the ugly. If push comes to shove, you can give the baby four names, and the ugly one can be the second middle name.

Susan | 6406 comments There was an Olga, Oval, Erlene, and Percy in my family.

There was no way in hell any of them were contenders for my baby's name.

Oval is one of those names so ghastly it could actually be hip.

I'm waiting for the hipsters to discover the name Oral....as in Oral Roberts.

Susan | 6406 comments Oval...hip...
::gags::

Oral Blumpy.

If those are my choices, I pick Olga.

message 12: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments I am named after mygrandmother. Her name isn't Olga.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I was not named after anyone, being the second child, second daughter. I still managed to get a crappy name. Would I trade it for Olga? Probably not.

message 14: by evie (new)

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments Lou-ann Olga or Virginia Olga ?

message 15: by Spellbound (new)

Spellbound (spellboundreads) | 117 comments Granted Olga is not in my top-ten for names, I don't mind it. It has class, it has history. It can hardly be shortened or modified which is definitely a plus for me. If carried with pride it is a name that can make you stand out. And I've heard much worse.
The problem is: if the mother doesn't like it, it doesn't matter who it belonged to, she shouldn't use it.

message 16: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Olga reminds me of Volga boatmen.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Who?

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Volga made me think of vulva...not a good thing in a kids name...

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

What's up with you and the random name dropping?

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay. That's probably the third link of his I have clicked tonight to figure out what he's on about...

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Um . . . that's why I put the link there?

I'm inherently lazy, Felarry...

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Olga was a back-up hair-cutter for me when I lived in Round Rock, TX. She was a lovely young lady. Probably still is.

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments My Aunt Olga use to pinch my cheeks so hard...she also wore giant furs and smelled of strong perfume.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

My auntie Carol's mom (my moms growing up best friend, not a real aunt) was named Olga. She was a big lady who always wore an apron, baked cookies and made Swedish pancakes. She lived right behind my gran. I loved going to Olga's!

message 28: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments Now that sounds like an Olga to have around. That also makes me think of a restaurant called, "Olga's Kitchen". Great food!

So one person does 3/4 of the haircut, then the manager signals to the bullpen for Olga? As Olga warms up, cutting a mannequin's hair.

message 30: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That seems much more interesting than the reality of my main hair-cutter not being available once in a while.

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments Is Olga vulgar?

message 32: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Not in the least. She's actually quite nice.
