December's reading challenge is The 12 Days of Christmas challenge!

Photobucket

Here is what you do…

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:

1. A Partridge in a Pear Tree: Pear trees symbolize long life. Read a book with a character who is old. It does not have to be a main character.

2. Two Turtle Doves: Turtle doves symbolize love. Read a book about love/romance.

3. Three French Hens: French Hens symbolize hope and charity. Read a book where one of the characters volunteers or does charity work. It does not have to be a main character.

4. Four Calling Birds: Birds are sometimes considered messengers of the gods. Read a book with a god or goddess.

5. Five Golden Rings: Read a book where someone gets engaged or married.

6. Six Geese a Laying: In animal symbolism, the goose stands for faithfulness or loyalty. Read a book with a dog or about a dog.

7. Seven Swans a Swimming: Swans remind me of the ugly duckling. Read a book where one of the characters undergoes a major change or gets a makeover.

8. Eight Maids a Milking: Read a book that takes place on a farm. This does not have to be the main setting.

9. Nine Ladies Dancing: Read a book where one of the characters is a dancer or dancing takes place within the book at some point.

10. Ten Lords a Leaping: A lord is a man of noble rank or high office. Read a book with a lord/king.

11. Eleven Pipers Piping: Bagpipes are usually associated with Scotland. Read a book that takes place in Europe.

12. Twelve Drummers Drumming: Read a book about music.

You can pick and post your books now or post as you go, but do not start reading until December 1! Post what challenge level you are aiming for.

PepperP0t this is cute, but of course I'm confused.

1) a December challenge that we don't start reading until December 31. Is this a typo?
2) the 8-maids a milking you say either but there is no choice there.

either way I'm in for hard - just wanna be clear.

Carina | 258 comments I think I'll give this a go too! Not yet sure what I'll aim for yet, I'll check through my books but have taken advantage of Michaels kind offer!

EDIT:

1. A Partridge in a Pear Tree: Pear trees symbolize long life. Read a book with a character who is old. It does not have to be a main character.

Interview with a Vampire

2. Two Turtle Doves: Turtle doves symbolize love. Read a book about love/romance.

North and South - Read: Sixteen Brides

3. Three French Hens: French Hens symbolize hope and charity. Read a book where one of the characters volunteers or does charity work. It does not have to be a main character.

I have no books that do this - unless Little Women counts? (Marmee helps out those who require it, as do all the girls - the Himmles) - can someone advise if this counts please??

4. Four Calling Birds: Birds are sometimes considered messengers of the gods. Read a book with a god or goddess.

Sandman - hope Graphic novels count!

5. Five Golden Rings: Read a book where someone gets engaged or married.

Little Women - Read: Sixteen Brides

6. Six Geese a Laying: In animal symbolism, the goose stands for faithfulness or loyalty. Read a book with a dog or about a dog.

None of my physical books have dogs in them - will have a look through Kindle ones.

7. Seven Swans a Swimming: Swans remind me of the ugly duckling. Read a book where one of the characters undergoes a major change or gets a makeover.

Hannibal

8. Eight Maids a Milking: Read that takes place on a farm. This does not have to be the main setting.

Fables - hopefully you guys are letting Graphic Novels count! - Read: Sixteen Brides

9. Nine Ladies Dancing: Read a book where one of the characters is a dancer or dancing takes place within the book at some point.

Little Women

10. Ten Lords a Leaping: A lord is a man of noble rank or high office. Read a book with a lord/king.

Sandman

11. Eleven Pipers Piping: Bagpipes are usually associated with Scotland. Read a book that takes place in Europe.

Underneath

12. Twelve Drummers Drumming: Read a book about music.

Nada...

So looks like I'm reading 7 books which is medium level and completing (if I manage it!) 9!

Edit: 20/12/12 - very little reading time this month - luckily one of the books I substitued covered three scenarios! So at least I managed to hit Easy (kind of).

It depends on how they are portreyed in the book...if they are considered gods or god-like. They would work for #1 for sure...someone old.
