It's not the first time I've heard the word or come into contact with the concept. It's fascinating and the obvious solution and tool for blind people. It may be of help to many people. I certainly see it as an incredible enhancement of a sense that we can use to grow our knowledge.
Echolocation is a fundamentally simple skill that many blind people use daily to navigate and understand their environment. This skill is sometimes misunderstood, but it’s far more realistic and much easier than you may think.
In October 2012, the first book of its kind was published teaching "human echolocation" - the ability to "see" with sound instead of sight. This book provides a foundation for blind people worldwide to see beyond the tip of their cane and become infinitely more independent.
But more than a tool for orientation and mobility, this unique ability provides the human race with a glimpse of something seemingly impossible. Imagine having the ability to sense the 3-dimensional space around you without seeing it - just knowing the size, shape and location of everything around you. This level of perceptual awareness is unmatched by any other human sense.
The Beginner's Guide to Echolocation provides scientific background, real life applications and actionable lessons for learning this unique skill. The book is available in paperback as well as accessible editions for the blind community. For more information, visit: http://www.humanecholocation.com/
