Tonks | 3 comments I'm working on a project where I'd like to find relatively well-known books with a chess piece or pieces on the cover. Chess instructional books aren't what I'm going for. I already know about

The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen L. Carter , The Eight by Katherine Neville , The Rook by Daniel O'Malley , and of course Breaking Dawn (Twilight #4) by Stephenie Meyer . Any more ideas?

Probably some more good ones here:
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/30...

Sometimes the foreign language editions have more explicitly chess-themed covers than the English language ones. You may want to look at every cover/edition of each book.

Shanna_redwind | 852 comments Here's some I found. Some of them are certainly not well known, and you may not be able to use them, but I'll let you decide.

Truth (Consequences, #2) by Aleatha Romig The Chess Set in the Mirror by Massimo Bontempelli Masters of Technique The Mongoose Anthology of Chess Fiction by Howard Goldowsky Freddie Loses His Game by Dorian Clay Chess With A Dragon by David Gerrold
The Knight of New Orleans, the Pride and the Sorrow of Paul Morphy by Matt Fullerty The Cosmic Chess match by L.A. Marzulli The Art of Nothing by Julian Gallo

There's a few Astounding Science fiction magazines with chess on the cover, and I found some comic books that also have a chess piece on the cover. I found them with a google picture search and just scrolled through.

HJ Mystery Mile (Albert Campion Mystery #2) by Margery Allingham by Margery Allingham.

This is well known by lovers of English mysteries, and the Campion series (of which this is one) has been televised by the BBC starring former Doctor Who Peter Davison.

There is an entire article on covers with chess/checkers here.

bookel | 4018 comments I'm trying to find a children's fiction book that I thought had chess pieces in a garden in the background but it was too hard to tell on the blurred cover, now I forget what the title/author was. Browsing for it and finding others in the meantime. I don't know if these have already been mentioned. Entering text title and author to make checking easier.
- The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (more than one cover has chess pieces)
- The Chessmen of Doom by John Bellairs (Cover)
- The Amazing Adventure of Dan the Pawn
by Simon Garrow (Cover)
- The Princess Pawn by Maggie L. Wood (Cover - pawn in her hand)
- Alex and the Wednesday Chess Club by Janet S. Wong (Cover)
- Grandmaster by David Klass (Cover)

- Chess-Dream in a Garden by Rosemary Sutcliff (Cover)
- Perpetual check by Rich Wallace (Cover)

How about Free Fall by David Wiesner? There are no chess pieces on the cover, but it's an amazing and beautiful picture book in which a boy tangles up all the mundane items in his life in a strange chessboard garden dreamscape.

Laura L | 1 comments I see this is an old thread but I am at my wit's end. Years ago (probably 1989-1990) I read an adult historical fiction novel about an ancient chess set found in the ruins of a French convent and it was thought to have belonged to the Knights Templar. I have Googled and Googled but cannot find anything remotely like it. I remember the paperback cover was a dark blue or purple and it had a chess piece on the cover; something about the pieces had been scattered to the four corners of the earth and they couldn't be reunited again or something bad would happen. ANY IDEAS MOST GRATEFU!

Laura, please create a new thread (topic) for your book request. Here's a link to get started - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

This is a general discussion thread for any book with "Chess pieces on cover."

Laura, although your post is misplaced, I believe you're thinking of The Eight by Katherine Neville. Tonks referenced it in the first post back in 2012.
