I have to admit that I didn't bother to research why people thought the world might end. The impression I gained was that it was because a Mayan calendar "only" went up to this winter's solstice. If that is why, then duh! Why don't they think the world will end every 31st December, given that most calendars you buy end then? The logic seems to be the same.

Yeah, it was about as cleverly thought out as most apocalypse theories, it was just better publicised than most. I kind of like apocalypse theories, actually. So often people have irrational ideas that can never really be proven or disproved, which is frustrating. At least with apocalypses the date passes, nothing happens, and then the believers have to accept they were wrong and move on.
