Heart to palpitate
Last eyes want to see
Hours to agitate
Moments now to flee
No voice there to talk
Legs for good in rest
Cold feet long to walk
Stale ears deaf abreast
Two breaths to take in
One last to remain
Life is now shakin’
Soul fails to regain
Two hands to pray with
No mouth to utter
His face pales grey with
The deadly shutter

Hey, teacher!
Oh, you don’t know my name?
I was that kid who sat right there in the front row
answering all those questions you said had lots of right answers.
I was that kid they thought about
when they wrote the checks to you
thinking they were really writing the check to me, the hope of America.
I was that kid who noticed the negative slope
when you asked me to find the derivative of my learning curve.
Just because T.S. Eliot doesn’t resonate,
doesn’t vibrate my heartstrings at 440 hertz
(which you said would sound an A4)
doesn’t mean you haven’t hurt my brain
hundreds of times.
You tell me to find the chemical symbol for the most valuable substance
and I’ll tell you it’s M-E.
I’ll tell you that I am a god
trapped by my own flesh
and the walls of your classroom papered with inspirational sayings.
I don’t care if I miss a hundred percent
of all the shots I don’t make,
because I have better things to do than missing
a hundred percent of the shots I do.
And all that garbage about applying geometry to life? I’ll only use it if I want to find the volume of the construction cones
I’m told to put out.
In which case you’ve failed me,
the hope of America.
And remember how you told us to graph the motion of those snails?
My snail didn’t move. The graph was one flat line.
Just like the line on the heartrate monitor
of the dead grandmother I couldn’t visit
because of your weekly chapter quizzes
that had the hardest questions.
And as for the snail...please pass the salt.
Sometimes you would actually teach us something useful.
You’d tell us about the sunset, your first kiss,
and, if you were feeling brave that morning,
you’d tell us that we wouldn’t have homework.
So that maybe someone could have time for both the sunset and first kiss on a single night without having to worry about how the air particles make the colors so pretty
and how hormones really make the girl so pretty
and the viruses that come from falling too far.
Not that I can fall much farther
than my grades reflect.
Because none of us are listening.
We’re thinking about the roller coasters of our lives
of the new roller coaster at the amusement park
of the amusement I tried to give you
when I drew a hippo in dark black pen
over the essay question, then wrote:
“I can’t answer the question because
a hippo is in the way.”
So get out of my way, hippo-crite, because I want to stretch my wings,
even if you’ve clipped the feathers that let me fly.
Stop teaching me the tools of the trade,
and teach me how to keep my heart beating,
my mind exploring, and my value untarnished.
But let’s face the facts.
We’ll never see eye-to-eye.
You’ll never change, and you’re going to lecture
about whatever it is you’re paid so little to teach.
But now I have one small question.
Since I’ve been trapped in your class for a long time
(and failing for most of it)
is there anything I can do for extra credit?

Rule 2)
A. Please only enter your own work.
B. As long as you wrote it I don't care when you wrote, if it has to do with the theme of the contest enter it.
C. I don't care what it is, whether it be a poem, a short story, a chapter of a book your writing, a verse of a poem, a song, or whatever. Again as long as you wrote/made it please by all means enter it.
Rule 3) Nothing too sexually graphic. Please be considerate to our younger members.
Rule 4) When voting time comes around NO VOTING FOR YOU OWN WORK. That is kind of like... cheating.
And the Final Rule (For now) Please Name your work. Only so when voting time comes I have something to call it when I write up the poll. Thank you and the best of luck to you all!
*NOTE*
When it comes to themes it is whatever the theme makes you think of. Like angels make some people think of hope while others think of God, and others just good people. I personally always think of Armageddon... dunno why...
One million people equals a million ways to see the world.
