Zulfiya (ztrotter) I second Villette, but I would like to nominate the seminal classic of post-modern fiction, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco , The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments Ohhh, I 3rd The Count of Monte Cristo - it's also been on my list for ages!

message 10: by Brandon (new) - added it

Brandon Since the movie just came out, I nominate Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

Stephanie North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell by Elizabeth Gaskell would be a good one! :D

message 12: by Melody (new)

Melody (mhsuite) Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

message 13: by Andrea (new)

Andrea So many good picks here! I think right now Villette by Charlotte Brontë looks like my #1

I already Les Mis and it is very good. I can't wait to see the movie!

message 14: by JoLene (new) - added it

JoLene (trvl2mtns) Not sure if this would be classic, but what about
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Renee Brandon wrote: "Since the movie just came out, I nominate Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.

I second this one! I have been wanting to do a group read of this book for sometime now.

Silver Amy wrote: "I would like to nominate Ulysses by James Joyce.

I 2nd this, thought about nominating it myself

message 18: by Nina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nina (ninarg) | 84 comments Well really! The Forsyth Saga, the Count of Monte Cristo and Gone With the Wind are all high up on my to-read list. I read Les Mis last year, it is phenomenal, one of the best books I have ever read. It's going to be hard choosing among these nominations:)

message 19: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) I hear you Nina! These are all amazing choices!! Can't wait to see what the vote will lay at our feet!

Bookworm Adventure Girl (bookwormadventuregirl) JoLene wrote: "Not sure if this would be classic, but what about

I would like to second Gone with the Wind. Us Jolenes must stick together!

message 21: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Gone with the Wind has come close to winning several times but it always falls short by a couple of votes. Maybe if it is not picked again we could do it as a side read.

message 22: by Andrea (new) - added it

Andrea (tasseled) | 189 comments So many great choices. I can't wait to see which one will top the poll. Either way I know I won't be disappointed. I was actually torn between The Count of Monte Cristo, Les Mis, and Gone With the Wind when I was nominating my choice.

Yes -- we do!! You're the first other jolene I've seen on GR :-D
I'm torn on Les Mis because I want to see the movie in the theater so that means I'm probably not going to want to read it right away.

You are the only other Jolene I have seen on GR too!
I have seen Les Mis as a broadway play but have never seen Gone With The Wind so that's my preference.

message 25: by JoLene (new) - added it

JoLene (trvl2mtns) I saw the Broadway play a long time ago and I have to admit, I think that I fell asleep because I didn't know anything about the story and couldn't understand all the singing (I was also jet-lagged at the time).

message 26: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Andrea wrote: "Gone with the Wind has come close to winning several times but it always falls short by a couple of votes. Maybe if it is not picked again we could do it as a side read."

That's fine, but you get to lead it! ;)

Becky Oh my! Those are all great and I've never read any of them! I gave no idea how I'll vote! This could be our classic reading list for the year and I think I'd be happy

Stephanie Becky wrote: "Oh my! Those are all great and I've never read any of them! I gave no idea how I'll vote! This could be our classic reading list for the year and I think I'd be happy"

ME TOO! :D

Hmmm...a good idea...how to incorporate it tho??

message 30: by Sera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sera I agree that this is an excellent list. I am not even sure now which one that I want to read!

message 31: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy (bibliocrates) I have Ulysses, Villette, and Gone with the Wind. Hopefully, it will be one of those because I need to chill out on my book buying for a while.

I'm in the same boat, I stocked up for the year and now I really need to stop buying! Crazy how many books you can buy isn't it?? Too many good ones staring at you when you go to the bookstore!

message 33: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy (bibliocrates) I will never have enough!

message 34: by Andrea (new)

Andrea We could pick the top 2-3 as the next couple of reads. We can read them in order of highest votes! What do you guys think?

message 35: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle8731) Yes!

Stephanie Sign me up!

message 37: by Brandon (new) - added it

Brandon Andrea wrote: "We could pick the top 2-3 as the next couple of reads. We can read them in order of highest votes! What do you guys think?"

Yes! That's a great idea!

message 38: by Ellen (last edited Jan 04, 2013 10:01PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ellen Librarian (ellenlibrarian) | 172 comments I hate to be a naysayer but for me, my choice of reading material depends a lot on my mood and other factors going on in my life. Since we're reading chunksters, we'd be picking books #2 and #3 months and months in advance. So I'd prefer to wait and choose a book closer to the time of actually reading it.

message 39: by Sera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sera I agree, but if we go this route, let's make sure that we get all of our nominations in play for the year. Readers tend to be fickle people - ha ha - only because we get easily distracted by shiny new objects.

message 40: by Zulfiya (new) - added it

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Sera wrote: "I agree, but if we go this route, let's make sure that we get all of our nominations in play for the year. Readers tend to be fickle people - ha ha - only because we get easily distracted by shiny..."

Shiny new objects called books?!?

message 41: by JoLene (new) - added it

JoLene (trvl2mtns) Shiny new classics --- isn't that an oxymoron. ;-)

Brandon Sera wrote: "I agree, but if we go this route, let's make sure that we get all of our nominations in play for the year. Readers tend to be fickle people - ha ha - only because we get easily distracted by shiny..."

Very true! Would it be okay for us to nominate more than one book if we decide to do this?

message 43: by Zulfiya (new) - added it

Zulfiya (ztrotter) JoLene wrote: "Shiny new classics --- isn't that an oxymoron. ;-)"

It definitely is. And an aesthetic one:-)

Stephanie We could just vote on which approach...or...??? I don't know if that would be OK...?

message 45: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy (bibliocrates) I like this idea. I've noticed the same books keep getting nominated, so let's read them all - one at a time, of course!

message 46: by Brandon (new) - added it

Brandon Stephanie wrote: "We could just vote on which approach...or...??? I don't know if that would be OK...?"

This would make things a lot easier. :D

message 47: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I'm open to whatever you guys want to do. Ellen, I understand what you are saying and I didi think of that when I made the suggestion. I was thinking that so many books are repeat nominations that it might work okay.

message 48: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (hmom) Name of the rose has been on my TBR list for over a year.

Becky Really I am happy either way, but these are all works I really want to read. I think that it might be nice to know the next 2 or 3 just so I could plan better because sometimes I coordinate these reads with one of my friends

message 50: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Today's the last day to nominate, so get your favorites in! I will post a poll on Thursday so we can vote.

For this round let's just vote for our next read, Andrea, Loretta and I will work out a method for this other idea and post polls and discussions for it as we get the ideas more filled out. Sound good to everyone??
