Kimberly (kimberly_b) | 429 comments I was compiling a reading order list for the Outlander and Lord John books for a friend and I was wondering if you all could verify that I have everything correct and all of the LJG/Outlander works. Here it is:

Outlander (#1)

Dragonfly in Amber (#2)

Voyager (#3)

“Lord John and the Hellfire Club” (novella in Lord John and the Hand of Devils)

Lord John and the Private Matter (novel)

“Lord John and the Succubus” (novella in Lord John and the Hand of Devils)

Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade (novel)

“Lord John and the Haunted Soldier” (novella in Lord John and the Hand of Devils)

“Lord John and the Custom of the Army” (novella in Warriors anthology; also published in UK in A Trail of Fire)

The Scottish Prisoner (novel)

“Lord John and the Plague of Zombies” (novella in Down These Strange Streets anthology; also published in UK in A Trail of Fire)

Drums of Autumn (#4)

The Outlandish Companion (no new material)

The Fiery Cross (#5)

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (#6)

An Echo in the Bone (#7)

“A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows” (short story in Songs of Love and Death anthology; also published in UK in A Trail of Fire)

“The Space Between” (short story in The Mad Scientist’s Guide to World Domination anthology; also published in UK in A Trail of Fire)

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood (#8)

“Virgins” (short story to be published in Dangerous Women anthology)

Thanks!

Crystal | 6 comments I am so glad that I saw this. I was curious about when to read the Lord John books!

JC (jmnc) | 27 comments gertt wrote: ""Virgins"....Dangerous Women anthology??? Is this by Diana Galbaldon?"

Yes! It will be about Jamie and Ian's young manhood (I think, since I haven't read any of the excerpts she's been posting on her blog).

JC (jmnc) | 27 comments Here is the order from Diana's website:

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments I loved her comment on the Dangerous Women anthology - when - when George finishes writing his contribution...lol! that is why I haven't start the Songs of fire and ice books - I can only deal with one huge incomplete series at a time and DG takes precedence

Thanks for posting the link! I went off of the list DG has in A Trail of Fire, because I couldn't find it on her website. The list in ATOF isn't complete so I wanted to double-check my list. I put "A Leaf on the Wind..." and "The Space Between" before WIMOHB since presumably they can be read before #8 since it isn't out yet.

Kimberly (kimberly_b) | 429 comments Jamie and Ian are mercenaries in France in "Virgins." The anthology was supposed to come out last year but, like Dee mentioned, George is always behind schedule.

Donna - Rosies.ReadingNook (dantaramian) You don't have to read the LJG book in order to read the Outlander series. Read only 2 .. One being then Scottish Prisioner.

Burbanista | 158 comments Glad I decided to check this discussion string! I'm almost done DoA and loving Lord John more with each passing book. I was wondering when and where his books fit in. I might take a Jamie & Claire break after DoA to read about Lord John.

message 10: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) | 153 comments Loved The Lord John books. They really made me love him all that much more :)

message 11: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments I didn't care for the LJG books except Scottish Prisoner. A lot of people love them though and get so much more out of the story for having read them. Enjoy your Jamie and Claire break.

I read the early Lord John books after Outlander #3, Voyager (Outlander, #3) by Diana Gabaldon If you back up on this thread to message #5 there is a link to the order for the Lord John series. I would also recommend reading Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade (Lord John Grey, #2) by Diana Gabaldon before reading Outlander #7 An Echo in the Bone (Outlander, #7) by Diana Gabaldon Hope this helps :D

Linda B.D. (lindabd) | 16 comments Does anyone know of one book that does a general re-cap of the series? (or a link)? I don't think my eyes will let me read all of them again.

Susan Pola Staples | 22 comments Try the Outlander Companion.

I got all the audio books from my local library on CD's which can be ripped onto your computer as MP3files using Windows Media Player (then you can save your eyes). The library had all the audio books and ebooks available too, and even the TV show's DVD. Check your local library and save some money and your eyes.

Tracy (tracylemos) | 39 comments I was going to read all the big books and then go do the Lord John books. Anyone violently disagree with that plan or think it's a bad idea for any reason?

message 18: by Parker (new)

Parker | 109 comments Tracey, Diana has said that that's just fine. That's what I'm going to do too.

message 19: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 13 comments Yes. That's what I've done too. It works fine. The LJG ones just fill in some gaps and are fine to read after the main books.

Roseanne | 229 comments Nice list. I’m planning on rereading and the first time I didn’t find the lord John books until I was well beyond where they fall chronological. I think I’m going to follow your list for my reread.
