My memoir about my mother, THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE, will be published by Knopf on April 28th. I am counting the days. In the meantime, I hope you'll read an excerpt on my website and tell me what you think...as the ice thaws on Paradox Lake.

Congratulations on getting published!
I've bookmarked your website and look forward to reading the excerpt.
Is the ice really melting? That's the best news I've heard all day! LOL The snow on our roof is rapidly disappearing. Another good sign. :)

I truly enjoy reading and responding to all of my groups and thank you for this one. But I have decided that I spend TOO much time on this computer and have been neglecting things, such as my husband,work around the house, etc. So I am going to sign off on all of the social groups, so that I can get everything back into their rightful place and place my church and my husband in their right priority. It's been fun.

I've been on and off the online message boards since 1995. When I quit the message boards I did crossword puzzles instead. Not the same. LOL
The interactive Internet has ushered in a new age none of us are prepared to deal with. It's marvelous and, at the same time, it's troublesome. I'll leave it to the writers to come up with metaphors. Perhaps it's too much of a good thing.
I wrote a poem back in 1976 during our country's bicentennial year. It went like this:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A POEM WRITTEN BY JOY FOR THE 1976 BICENTENNIAL:
(for the AAUW Dinner Program booklet of the same year)
REFLECTION
Bicentennial -- a time to look back,
Bicentennial -- a time to look forward,
And always as we look, one constant theme emerges: Change.
Change, constant, never-ending change.
It has always been with us:
The challenge of change,
a gentle zephyr
grown into a gallant gale.
Can we cope with it?
ever-quickening,
ever-unsettling.
The challenge of change
now felt by all women everywhere,
for who can escape the tempests of time?
Must we change? Should we change?
No matter.
Whatever the alterations of time,
We must each be allowed to be different.
For though we change,
we must each change
in our own way,
Accepting the challenge on our own terms.
Bicentennial,
a time for each of us
to look back,
to look forward.
KJ, I'm sure your decision is right for you. We each have to weigh the pros and cons and also... get this all-consuming Internet under control... so that we control IT and it doesn't control US.
Good luck, KJ.
