What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I have only read the prologue but the plot is about a high school girl who lives with her mother, who I think was a detective, and grandmother. The girl, and her mother, have a form of telepathy. I remember a scene where she is in the locker room at school and touched a brush her friend had been using and saw that her friend was abused and flips out as she felt all of her friends negative emotion. When she recovers, she reports the abuse and daves her friend from furthur abuse. Anyway, her mother is killed in a car acident (I believe) the grandmother sends her away to this boarding school for other kids with special powers. The last thing I remember reading is when she meets some ofthe other kids at this school. I remember a strong boy that throws boulders.

Robin, this sound familiar to me. I'm not sure what from, and right now I have a major migraine. If I can come up with a title after this headache eases, I'll post for you. I remember the hairbrush scene. Doesn't her friend KNOW what she can do, and deliberately puts the brush into the girl's hand because she KNOWS that that way she will be rescued from the abuse? At least, the book I'm thinking of that happens.

Ok, didn't even have to really THINK about it, but I believe what you want is the series MYTHOS ACADEMY. Book 1 Touch of Frost has what you describe in it.
