The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap question

Since I was one of the readers, I wanted to let you know which definition was used then answer this. From the Oxford Dictionary: "hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs; oppression; persistent annoyance or harassment. The whole intent of Josie, the antagonist, was to persecute Mildred through gossip and actions to turn others against her, which involved most of the scenes she was in, since Mildred took up with Charley.
