It wouldn't be a proper group without an introduction. I'm leaving one here naturally. More posts and topics will no doubt spring up shortly. One important thing is that this should be a group where everyone can basically moderate and put in their own topics. So go for it, go wild if you want.

This is great! I didn't think there would be one on linguistics. It's one of my interests. Thank you, Jonathan, for the invite. I have a feeling that I'll be seeing some of the same crowd, so I won't go on with introducing myself. Just an ALOHA!

You can blame spenke for this one with his talk of Derida and Chomsky.

message 4: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Peto (jonathanpeto) I don't mind poking around linguistics. Maybe someone could start with authors and their made up words (or readers and their made up words for that matter).

Maurizio (matemati) | 1 comments Thanks for the invite. I'm interested in linguistics, so I liked the idea. I'm not a specialist, and don't know how much I can contribute, but I start joining, and the rest will come :)

Jason (ancatdubh2) Jonathan wrote: "You can blame spenke for this one with his talk of Derida and Chomsky."

I think it's fair to blame spenke for anything. And why, perhaps even everything!

message 7: by Nathan "N.R." (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) Well now yes. Invited thanked!

So and between Derrida and Chomsky, as the two signifiers of bodies of works which I have thus far detected, I can assume that absolutely anything and everything goes in this group? Is it perhaps not the case, could we not in some way suggest that the only thing the two have in common is that they have each learned the other's native language, are both of Jewish extraction, and both speak far more languages and are far and away the two smartest people who have recently walked the earth? Could we not say this, and then wonder at the two being included within the parameters of a common set of questions?

Penki, I'll assume, will have a writing and difference folder operating sometime in the near term?

message 8: by Jason (new)

Jason (ancatdubh2) Damn, Mr. Puma, you got there first. It's almost like I just glaze over your comments as if they don't matter, huh?

Has Writing and Difference not had the group treatment yet? Then this is a good place to do it, hm?

In fact, since we are allowed to?,(Johnathan said so;-- or did i not understand correctly?) maybe i'll start a thread "on difference" as it is approached by various linguists/language philosophers?

One of penki's orginal impulses behind this group. You got a copy?

maybe i'll start a thread "on difference" as it is approached by various linguists/language philosophers?

That would be the ground element of the Saussurean linguists and the subsequent structuralist and post-structuralist thought. And central to Mr Deleuze: Difference and Repetition. Heady heady stuff.

I have a lot of Deleuze's work. This is a good excuse to start hitting it, in addition to the fact that the Proust group has him as an auxiliary read.

How about Douglas R. Hofstadter? He's interested in language translations, symbols, speaks multiple languages, and even does math and computer speak.

I personally blame MJ for everything, especially since he dropped Proust. In fact, one of the reasons I undeleted my FB profile is so I can torture him with double the Proust updates.

Thanks for the invite, Jonathan. (In response to what you said in your invite--yes, I do dislike invites in general, but if they're sent by someone who I regularly interact with as I do with you, then I'm cool with it. So no worries!)

This group was an awesome idea. Looking forward to discussion everyone! Ciao! (for now)

Yup, all on the menu for this year. Though, of course, i might want to try and circumnavigate as best i can around Mr Deleuze...

..but have you ever tried to read him? I did, and i didn't get far. Not because he is difficult to comprehend, but bc he is sooo.. so so ANNOYING!!! And kinda rude as well.

I haven't read any of his work. I'm going to start with his Proust and Signs: The Complete Text. All philosophers are annoying at some point. Doctor, heal thyself.

Maybe the first thing this group should do is dispel this accusation once thrown against Jesus.

I'm interested in cognition and language development. I'll have to organize material on that and create a section. I have a lot of materials.

Sure, you help me get into trouble. You open my mouth and let me put my foot in it. I mean, this is a philosopher's haven. Time to arm myself with some...madeleines. Better yet, I'll distract them with Women and Men while I run away. Looky at the pretty BIG and COMPLEX book.....

I made a mistake in putting the topic in the wrong place. I don't know whether I can edit. I meant it as a folder to put my favorite cognitive scientists under.

message 25: by Erin (new)

Erin I was so very confused when I got this invitation because I had just been thinking about how I was going to study Latin in a little bit and then I saw the invite and I had one of those moments of, "How does the internet know what my plans are for the day?" And then I realized what it was and I said, "Oh der." I probably won't be able to contribute much but I shall attempt to do so.

Traveller wrote: "Latin? Ha, good luck to you on that as well. Oh gosh, those conjugations..."

:) I'm really hoping that it won't be too hard for me since I can speak Spanish. Though I really just have no idea. I haven't gotten that far yet. Present tense seems to be quite easy so far.

message 31: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 3 comments I was actually quite pleased to get an invitation to this group, and was especially happy it came from you, Johnathan. He's a nice guy. Also, all my reading last year reinforced a lot of things I was studying when I was in college, and linguistics was one of them. It was my ge emphasis at sf state. Finally a place to profess my love of The Pleasure of the Text!

I have so many suggestions for books starting with the one I paraphrased up there. Also been meaning to find a way to work in Edward Said somehow and this group might be one way

I was thinking of starting a topic about linguistics-related websites, but I wasn't sure which folder to put it in, and then I thought it might be better as a folder, so that there could be separate topics for, for example, dictionaries, blogs, usage guides and so on. However, I think only admins can create folders.

Melissa Jeanette (melissajeanette) Hi all. Thanks for the invite Jonathan. I'm not a linguist either, but I took a linguistics class last quarter and found it quite fascinating. I look forward to learning more.

Thanks for the invitation, Jonathan. I don't have time to do much on goodreads anymore, but I look forward to reading the group's discussions and maybe throwing in an incredibly dumb comment from time to time.

It's great that this group was formed because this year was to be the year I learn about the structure of poetry. This will make me stop procrastinating about it.

Would poetry fall under literature or should it have its own folder?
