Tahun lepas saya tidak sertai cabaran di sini, tahun ni saya kembali. Sebab tertarik dengan cadangan Kak Najibah untuk buat blog.

1.The Alienist
2.Life on the Refrigerator Door

Norain | 687 comments Sebab ada sesetengah buku yang bosan mulanya tapi kemudian mula menunjukkan belangnya. Khuatir terlepas bahagian yang menarik...

A very nice story. Loved the main character and his motivation. I am still unsure though whether to rate this with 3 or 4 stars.

It seems like a quite a good story that become tedious to read at certain parts. Worth a try.

Oh wow? Really? I've always wanted to read Le Guin's books, more specifically her book The Left Hand Of Darkness. Haven't had a chance, but I read The Dispossessed which was just ok. Have you tried her other books?

I guess it did at some points. There were things that were not so successful about this book. Like Sadie, who unlike her husband Jack, refused to move on and remained trapped in her Nazi Germany past. I don't know how the author wanted her readers to perceive Sadie, but God, I found her too pathetic to my liking. And her reconciliation with Jack did not have the impact, the umph factor.

Well, mostly Sadie. I could relate to Elizabeth their daughter and I loved Jack and his drive to realise his impossible dream.

It was the writing style that I could not pretend to love. Like those things we relate to sastera in Malaysia, with its elaborate language and using 100 hundred words where five is enough. If I had the time maybe I could try to like it, but God knew I would rather move on.

A very enjoyable read.

But I wish I have time for non-fiction.

I had to skim through the last quarter of the book because it was too full of tragedy, too heart-wrenching. Man, I am unhappy enough as I am, why read a sad book?

Interesting idea but the execution, not so.
11.Man in the Queue

Two books that rather disappointed me.

I have finally read this book which everyone else but me seemed to have read! Yeay!

It was good but there were some disconcerting things about it. But I did cry at some parts.

No 48 best tak? Bercadang nak cari.

Norain | 687 comments Oh, best akak! Tau tak drama series kat BBC, 'The Midwife' yang dah masuk season 3 (kalau tak salah ingat)? Drama tu berdasarkan memoir ni la. Saya suka dua-dua, bukunya dan dramanya.

Memoir ni trilogi sebenarnya. Yang no 48 tu, Shadows Of The Workhouse dan Farewell To The East End: The Last Days Of The East End Midwives. Buku pertama banyak fasal pengalaman penulis sebagai bidan di East End London, yang kedua lebih kepada catatan pengalaman beberapa orang yang menjadi 'mangsa' workhouse. Yang ketiga saya tak pasti. Setakat ni saya baru baca buku pertama tu.
