This section is for discussion about the cognitive processes of language, how natural language shapes cognition, how cognition and language interact, and the biological aspects behind it.

Matthew | 3 comments Hi Aloha!

I'm quite happy to be here with all of you people. I'm quite interested in cognitive linguistics as well as psycholinguistics. It's been a long time since reading any of this kind of thing. George Lackoff might be a good place to start but I'm unsure if maybe you have more of a list of authors and books, and perhaps some structure to it all, already in mind. I've been pretty scattershot with my own suggestions.

Hi, Matthew! George Lackoff is a good place to start. There's Charles Fillmore and some others. I'll have to check. I've enjoyed work by cognitive scientist Steven Pinker, too. Once Jonathan put this into its own folder, maybe we can have separate threads for them.

Hi, Dawn. They are all cognitive theorists I'd like to study more about. I have a lot of Chomsky's work and am very interested in Bakhtin's work with literature and study of Dostoyevsky. I've been busy with studying Proust's work, so I've left my job here incomplete. There's a great forum on Proust right now, if you're interested, I'll post the link.

I'll go set up threads for these theorists. I'm so glad you showed up and reminded me of them.

BTW, Chomsky already has a thread under "Linguists and their Texts".

Dawn, here is the link to the Proust thread while I clumsily navigate through my iPad to post the threads. :o)

That's why I didn't finish what I started here!

Dear Matthew,

if you're interested in psycholinguistics - the articulate mammal by Jean Aitchison is a comprehensible and fun text to read (I have only read it a while ago, as I've been preoccupied mostly with nitty-gritty articles for my own psycholinguistic project).

Also, the book itself has a list at the end which points towards further reading in several different topics (depending on your interests, of course).

If you want some structured recommendation perhaps it would be an idea to read this book and then post what of it (if any :)) you've found interesting. I may then be able to help you better.

Warm greetings! :)
