What is the most important conflict in your text? Why is it so important?

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Sara | 17 comments In the non fiction book "Knots in my yo-yo string" by Jerry Spinelli. The most important conflict in the book is where Jerry Spinelli was talking about when he was younger and he punched his friend because he wanted to see how it was to punch someone since he never did before. Then he realized that its not something hes suppose to be doing and its not meant for him to do. Also i chose out this part of the book because not everything is meant for everyone and people have different things they like to do and dont and know how to do and he shouldnt have been trying to act like other people in his school and noone else should punch their own friend.

Monica | 43 comments Moira Young's second fiction book that follows the everlasting adventure story, Blood Red Road, comes Dust Lands. Saba, a younger sister is having troubles with her pa since he believes in seeing and believeing what the stars are telling him since he is ripe of old age. Lugh, Saba's older brother thinks he is just crazy and obnoxious. But when suddenly thunder roars and lightenning crashes and red dust began to appear, Saba was left speechless. After that, 4 men on cowboys decided to capture Lugh and take him away. While trying to take him away, they had to kill his father. Since Lugh was Saba's only brother and best friend, she set off into the road to find him. "They flip Lugh onto his back. One sits on him. Th' other one yanks his arm over his head, ties his wrists together, then his ankles." (29). This quote shows the immediate actions of the 4 men when they captured Lugh from his family. Lugh volunteered to protect the other members of the family but he fell into a deep case of misery. If Saba really wants her brother back, she really has to walk fast to find him. She is walking on 2 feet, they are walking on 4.

Justin Yu | 20 comments In the sci-fi book I am Legend by Richard Matheson, the book is about a man named Robert Neville, the only man on earth, and his greatest trouble is the fact that he can't see anyone or his family again. Before the apocalypse began, they wondered where to put his daughter. "I've been thinking, Bob," she said. "Maybe we should send her East to your mother's until I get better. It maybe contagius."(57) They are deciding where to put little kathy at because the disease is spreading. This means that he and his wife care about their family. But that is no longer more because everyone is gone from the world.

Mark | 33 comments In the book The Alchemyst by Michael Scott one of the greatest conflicts in the book so far is Josh and Sophie Newman are being hunted down by Dr. John Dee a very dangerous man along with an Elder of the first generation which is super powerful and hazardous. Josh and Sophie Newman found out that magic is real and one man Nicholas Flamel an old powerful alchemyst who is a legend decides to take Josh and Sophie because they are twins and the prophecy speaks of two twins who would save the world from Dr. John Dee and the evil elders. Nicholas Flamel takes the twins and brings them to Hekate the goddess with three faces so she could unlock their full powers so they can protect themselves. Wait why are you going to unlock our full potential and why can’t we go home. Dee will find you and he won’t hesitate to kill you and your family so you need protection and we need to keep an innocent people out of this, ok fine Josh said.”(134) this quote shows how Dee is a really big problem because now Josh and Sophie Newman can’t see their families anymore. Also they are separated and they are going to learn very powerful magic just to protect themselves from Dr. John Dee and anybody else who attacks them. This shows how Dr. John Dee is a big issue in the book so far.

Elva C. | 40 comments In the non-fiction memoir book, Red Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Jiang, there are many conflicts in the book, but one of the most important conflict is when the Red Guards were searching Ji-Li's house. Ji-Li's family were all trying to get rid of the fourolds, which is anything that are old ideas, od culture, od customs, and old habits in their house so that if the Red Guards come, they wouldn't have anything that would be a fourold they would find. One night, when the whole family was sleeping, the Red Guards came to the house and knocked on the door so they can come in and inspect the house to find anything that would be considered a fourolds. Everyone in the family was nervous and scared that something that might happen to them. Ji-Li states, "The rest were scattered on the floor along with some old copper coins. The chests themselves had been thrown..." (137). This quote shows how the Jiang's house had been all destroyed and became all messed up. When the Red Guards came in, they all destroyed the place, and just left. Ji-Li was so sad that her stamp collection, she has been collecting for many years had been gone. Everything was a mess and it all happened so suddenly. The whole apartment was a mess, and it took more than 2 days for them to clean the things. This is one important conflict in the book, which shows how Ji-Li's home, a place where they feel safe wasn't safe for them anymore because of the things that are happening.

In Bill Gutman's nonfiction biography book "Marion Jones: The Fastest Woman in the World", Marion Jones happens to be suffering some problems that is affecting her career on the track. Marion Jones was born in Los Angeles on October,12,1975. She grew up having some poverty problems. Marion had to go far for free education and her parents had to go far away too in order to earn more money for the family. Still, Marion managed through the tough times and got into some good schools. Over time as she was growing up, she was always good at basketball and track. Marion had made the teams and she was always the number one. Her height and hope helped her to success. Marion was playing basketball with a whole ton of points, assists, and rebounds. She was soon announced as the California State's best high school woman basketball player. Marion wasn't only the best basketball star, but also the best track and field star. Marion was not having trouble at all. She did have some devastating loses, but she was still the number one player. Marion had fight through everything. For example, she got into a very bad basketball accident once that destroyed almost every part of her, but she went through it and was back on the court in a short time. When Marion got even older, she started doing more track. Marion was racing everywhere all over the world later on. Marion was so busy flying all over the place that she ended up having no rest at all. On page 73 of the book, Bill wrote, "With her back still spasming, Marion cried in pain and wanted only her doctors to treat her." Then on page 73 ( Pages aren't right), Agent Charlie Wells said, "She's out of the championships. She still has muscle spasms in her lower back." That showed the conflict in the book so far. Marion had been injured and it affected her career in sports. Marion had no rest which caused the injury. This injury to Marion is just so important because the injury has ruin her chance of winning the championship and it might changed her actions in track. Marion is needing rest and nothing much can help. This problem changed her life as of now.

Matthew | 34 comments In the science fiction book, Unwind, by Neal Shusterman, the conflict is that parents can unwind their kids. Unwinding is when parents can send different parts of a child who are misbehaving to somebody who needs the parts to live. Connor is the first character in the book who is about to be unwound. "Running away is the only way to save my life," Connor hisses. "I'm about to be unwound in case you forgot." This shows the conflict because Connor is considering running away to save his life.

Jack Brill | 41 comments In the non-fiction book "Persepolis" Marjane Satrapi one of the many conflicts is when Marjane can not stand when her dad drives a Cadillac and has a maid. Another main conflict is the men in Iran make the women make veils to school. Another conflict is when Marjane's maid likes this boy but can not marry him because it is against the law to be with someone that is not in your social class so those are the main conflicts in " Persepolis" and the book is written by Marjane Satrapi herself.
