For those who want an idea of the costs involved in getting a print copy of a book published I've broken it down in my comparison between Authorhouse and Createspace on my blog.

Michelle Slee | 14 comments Thanks for posting this.I've opted for Createspace for Life Shift. Had the hard copy proof just before Xmas. Just need to address some formatting issues then it's good to go. Found it a good service to use...so far anyway.

Same here. Quality is awesome. Speediness of the order astounds me, and the price for authors to buy copies of their own books blows me away.

Very useful to have some numbers like that.

Isn't there an overlap with e-publishing, though? Presumably a cover commissioned for an e-book can simply be used (perhaps after cropping to the right dimensions) for a physical version?

I believe CS will set up the cover you've used on your print version to include with your e-version.

I ordered ten copies to place in local indie bookstores, aside from the three days to process the order, the delivery was pretty much overnight for standard shipping costs. Of course I live in MD and CS ships to me from their SC facility which is one day delivery using ground via UPS.

Your welcome Kira. Nothing like a little number crunching to open your eyes.

Your welcome Kira. I've edited the link to connect directly with the post.

Nicolas Wilson | 18 comments Thanks for the info. I'm just beginning to price out paperback editions, so the timing is perfect!

Does anyone have any thoughts on Lightning Source or Lulu?

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't used Lightning Source yet, but I plan to in the future. Lulu, from my understanding, doesn't give you much lee way in pricing a print book reasonably.

If you want a print copy of your book that's much more reasonable than Lulu, use CreateSpace. Take it from someone who has used both! :)

A.K. (akbutler) | 43 comments I used lightning source, and I really like them. Turnaround is fast, but the killer for me - they offer hardback, and matte covers. The matte cover thing was what finally did it for me. Really didn't want a glossy cover, haha. Anyway, I do like them a lot, and their quality is great and customer service is fantastic.

To people who use Createspace - my last two proofs were oddly printed. The print on some pages is darker than the others. I'd prefer the print to be darker on all pages, but it's inconsistent and weird. I complained about my last book and they said they fixed it but every copy had mostly lighter print. It's happening again with the current proof I have. Createspace are mostly okay but their customer service is terrible, in my opinion. I just want a book where the print looks right. Has anyone else experienced this?
