Hi Kids:

You've probably seen Shel's post regarding guidelines and my reply. What I'm hoping now is that people will say here if they want to be a moderator and what kind of involvement they would like (high - med - low -)

if you don't want to be a moderator at all, please remove yourself from the list. you'll have to delete your title first. :)

Once we have a core group of people, and know what they want to do, we can feel good about what we're doing and when we need to do it. it may be we won't end up with anybody offensive for months to come so we can just relax and lounge about. :)

since i started up this idea of moving over to goodreads, i will volunteer to moderate at a high level.

I don't want to be a moderator. In fact I probably need moderation. I really just want to mess about and have fun. But if you need one more I will do it. Or you can keep me on a back up list or something. Thanks!

I wouldn't mind being a moderator, but I worry about getting drunk with power and creating double standards and being a hypocrite. Beside the temptation to pimp out my book as a moderator and handing down bans from goodreads for others, judge-jury-executioner style, for doing the same is too great for me to be responsible about it.

I can be one, I suppose. Put me down for low on the level of involvement. I don't want to set the bar high and then disappoint.

i don't like directing conversation, but i do like moving things around and cleaning things up and having the ability to delete people who piss me off. so i guess that means i am desirous of low-level moderator status.

Low - medium.

Now I feel badly for posting a long-ass thing about rules and stuff.

Seriously, it's not that big a time commitment.

If we grow to 10,000 members we'll just hire someone and pay them in brilliant manuscripts. Aren't those worth something?

don't feel badly shel. what this is telling me is that we have a bunch of people who don't mind helping when we need them to. so those of us that put more time in will be able to say -- hey, i won't be around for a couple of weeks, can one of you guys keep an eye on things? and they'll say okay. :)

and the guidelines you suggested are good. we can pin them and close that thread until such time we need to discuss them again. we can direct people to go there and have a look when they first join (i'll amend the initial post in the welcome thread.)

and now back to everybody who is a moderator reading, writing, relaxing, and drinking their yak piss, or not, the same as people who are not moderators. :P

I was flattered when Mo made me a moderator, but it is not something I would have asked for. So even though I really love my moniker, you can remove me from moderator status.

Since you are concerned about becoming drunk with power you have reached the next level and can, in fact, now become drunk with power. Congratulations.

hi kerry:

i know i gave you the moderator status, but i don't feel right about removing people -- so i am going to ask that everybody who doesn't want to be a moderator, remove that status themselves. a tip regarding that: you can't remove a moderator unless you first delete the fun title. once the title is gone, that status can be removed.

thanks in advance. :)

You come to us for moderation Mare, and we are touched.

One thought: you were a active participant in the Backspace project. I wonder what you could to promote something like that in our new space? Maybe light a fire under Egret?

We wouldn't expect anything less than a long ass thing about rules and stuff from you! You need and deserve the highest level authority. If you lose your head, become power hungry, and resort to long ass things about rules and stuff, Ben's mid level authority should be enough to sabotage you...mein furchtloser leiter!

Ben, you mentioned earlier that one thing you would like to do is give the group Description on the front page a make over. I vote that you go for it. I suspect that you will improve it greatly on your first pass, and then you can make it your personal canvas for future updates, comments on the general timbre of the group at that time, etc. Great use of your moderator creds, and a task you could take ownership of.

Sound like a plan?

I'm fine with full tilt moderator authority. I doubt this will be too daunting a commitment and, unlike Dan, suspect I can set the bar low and then still disappoint.

All right mr. director, slow down. although I also feel after the initial rush people have laxed abit. I'd love too work on a project this summer. just not yet. I'm kinda swamped for a while. Why dont you make a list of projects and see if people want to volunteer.

Love Margaret

Oh ha! I'll slow down. It was a terribly busy weekend for me, driving a system implementation which was happening from here to Tampa to London to Manila, and many points inbetween. By the time I hit FFredux lasy evening I guess I was still in marching mode. Didn't mean anything by I said, other than to connect with you folks. Though I do think Ben could take on the group's description to good affect.

Love you too Mare.

can we have a medium slow down? i am happy to have you organize everybody! certainly the plan when we moved over here was (and was corroborated by the poll) to have the responsibility for the group not devolve on one person (or two -- shel's been doing a lot, and should be acknowledged for all her hard work) but i just worry that the minute i'm not unemployed or shel's got a crisis on her hands that we'll be in the same boat we were in before. frankly, before patty and michael said they'd give a lot of effort, i was REALLY worried.

so don't completely stop, please! :)

also

love

So are you like trying to say I'm one of those crisis-happy people? ;)

I've done this online community thing for a long time, I can handle the responsibility, no biggee for me, and I am happy to do it, because this community is vital for me in so many ways.

Opinion: I am thinking we need to take this onto email, if only to stop cluttering the discussion space about literature with moderators and rule and guidelines. I think it's confusing to new members, and old members who may just want to get on with the conversation...

Emailing multiple people isn't possible here, so... if it's ok, everyone who wants to be an active moderator, or semi-active, or semi-inactive, or people who just want to contribute to the organization of this new space -- wants to shoot me an email at shel_rogers@yahoo.com, I will compile the emails into a group list, of sorts, so that we can discuss.

hey shel:

i hear you about the clutter but i'm not sure if we should take this to email discussion. the idea of the democratic group means that people should be able to see these discussions, i think. certainly people are looking at these pages much more than they are looking at the discussion of UBIK -- have a look at the page views and you'll see what i mean. :)

we are still in early days yet, and i'm not sure people have all had the chance to login in and respond to these posts. i know we want to be efficient but not everybody is signing on regularly. maybe if people read this they can tell us whether they'd prefer us not to talk about it here, but as i said, it just doesn't make sense to me to pull the discussion away from the group. yes, a group email thing will definitely be good if we have to ban somebody in the future, and i wouldn't want to do THAT here. but otherwise? i don't know. it seems important for this to stay in the interests of open discussion and transparency.

:)

the other thing is, if people don't have an interest in a section of the group, they can just collapse it by clicking on the triangle beside the subfolder name -- and voila! group creation stuff disappears. :)

message 27: by Shel, ad astra per aspera (new)

Shel (shelbybower) | 946 comments Mod
No, I'm totally cool with it; I just don't want the preponderance of "new" posts to be more about running the group than actual FF content. I'm sure it's fine, though. And I do love the expand and collapse arrows! Beautiful and intuitive...

You guys are just fun to watch when you argue about nothing...Michael with his crazy organizational push, the listing of what to list, the speed of the slow down requested...I think I have learned more about the type of people you guys are in this thread than I have in any of the others for the past year or so...

i'm ok with talking about it anywhere. and i'll take up moderate to heavy responsibility unless something goes wrong in which case i'll deny everything. and mo... i bought valis and a bunch of other books. the desert has books and flies and full body clothing. and are any of you getting spammed by bad authors wanting to befriend you? at myspace the spam was more attractive to look at. these spammers are nerdy. and i know that most of this doesn't even belong in this thread topic but i forgot what thread topic i'm in.

anyway, sorry i haven't been of more use around here. i've been away from computers for a few days. i'll try to be more responsible and come up with better excuses in the future.

and arabic keyboards suck but their coffee is good. and since i'm talking about anything right now... my parents just sold their house. just thought some of you would like to know. if you're one of those that didn't really need or care to know, just ignore this bit of information.

will be back on pluto soon.

the irony here was that i'd already redone the group description! i liked je's intro in the old FF, i just wanted to cut it down so it'd fit on the main page and attract attention. do you think it should more fully articulate what we're about? endless insider jokes and whatnot?
