Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Our February Read-In book is On a Foreign Field A Story of Loyalty and Brotherhood by Hazel B. West

Join us here in February to chat about the book as you read!

Hazel West | 118 comments Thanks for setting up this topic =) Everyone feel free to ask any questions you want to about the book.

Shomeret | 45 comments Hazel, why did you name your central character Reeve? When I saw his name, I recalled that Reeve was an office in medieval times. So I did a search and found the following definition on a website called Medieval Life and Times.

"Reeve - A Reeve was a manor official appointed by the lord or elected by the peasants"

Does this have any relevance to why you selected the name, or do you just like the sound of the name "Reeve"?

Hazel West | 118 comments No reverence. I have a list of names that I like that I use whenever I start a new story. Sometimes I choose characters names for what they mean, and other times I just choose names that feel like the character-which can sometimes be annoying if the name isn't exactly accurate to the time period, but I have learned that once a character 'likes' their name, it's fatal to the story to change it ;)

I've just downloaded this and I'm very much looking forward to starting it. I have never read a book from this time space so that'll be exciting!

Hazel West | 118 comments Well, I hope you enjoy it, Emily =) medieval was always a favorite of mine.

Barbara (bkbsmiles) | 8 comments I guess I finally found the right place. I ordered the book today but it is going to my sister so hopefully I will have it time to participate. If not, I will read the archives. It is always fun to have a resident author group read! It had great reviews too!

Hazel West | 118 comments I hope you get a chance to join in with us!

Linda Ulleseit (lindaulleseit) | 30 comments Just finished the book, Hazel, and wrote you a review on Goodreads and Amazon. I'll also recommend it to my class of sixth graders!

Hazel West | 118 comments Thanks so much, Linda! That would be very cool if you recommended it to your class =)

B.B. Shepherd (bbshepherd) | 7 comments I'm on chapter four so far and enjoying it. I accidentally ordered two copies, so I'll pass one along!

Hazel West | 118 comments Oops, oh well, you can make it a gift or something ;) Glad you're enjoying it.

Hazel West | 118 comments Also, I thought I'd post the link to the character pictures I did for the story if anyone would like to see them:

Literary Chanteuse I'm a little late to the party but I have finally begun the book. Really enjoying it already. I actually read Braveheart recently so to read this from an english soldiers view point is very interesting. Thanks for the link above I'm gong to check that out.

Hazel West | 118 comments Glad you're enjoying it!. How is Braveheart as a novel? I've been wanting to read it, but haven't gotten around to getting a copy yet.

It is quite good. Very much like the movie even down to the dialogue but there are some extra things that take place which are not. The involvement of the King of France and the pope for instance. I don't want to give too much away incase you read it.

Hazel West | 118 comments Sounds good =)

Barbara (bkbsmiles) | 8 comments As it was delivered to my sister(with other books I was shipping to her), I did not receive this book until after the group read. I really have trouble timing things with group reads but do look forward to reading this in the future. I hope this thread stays in the archives so that I can enjoy. It's better when you are reading at the same time, but still nice to refer to later.

Hazel West | 118 comments Hi Barbara, I usually have the same problem with group reads. I'm sure the thread will stay open and if not, you can come visit me on History Buffs United and see my discussion group there =) http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6...
