message 3: by Jon (last edited Feb 01, 2013 11:03AM) (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I am squeezing in a few reads from my local library's adult winter reading program (click here for a link to the suggested readings for 'While the City Sleeps), including two of my currently-reading shelf books:

Lost Moon The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13 by Jim Lovell and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Waiting in the wings are:

Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and Kansas City Noir by Steve Paul

Then it's back to my 'normal' reading including:

Knife of Dreams (Wheel of Time, #11) by Robert Jordan Transformation (Rai-Kirah, #1) by Carol Berg Storm from the Shadows (Honorverse Talbot #2) by David Weber

If I can squeeze a couple more in, I would like to read:
Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne and Shadow's Edge (Night Angel, #2) by Brent Weeks

message 4: by Igor (new)

Igor (igork) | 33 comments Finishing Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice but meanwhile got Third Shift by Hugh Howey! I'm really excited to see how he will wrap up the Shift series...

message 5: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) Way too many books as usual:

In the Night Garden (The Orphan's Tales, #1) by Catherynne M. Valente - nearly done with this one and loving it

The Stand by Stephen King - One of his most popular books that's not from the Dark Tower, my first read of it

The Wind Through the Keyhole (The Dark Tower, #4.5) by Stephen King - listening to audio book which is actually read by Stephen King

The Icebound Land (Ranger's Apprentice, #3) by John Flanagan

Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne

Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees - might be a top pick

The Gods of Mars (Barsoom, #2) by Edgar Rice Burroughs

M.L. Chesley (melchesley) | 10 comments I'm working on 'Children of Sun and Moon' for a review and then I will be moving on to A. E. Marling's latest, 'Gown of Shadow and Flame'.

message 9: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Going to dig in to the second Chronicles Of Amber this month, but I tend not to read books from the same series consecutively(to make the series last longer, don'tcha know), so I've joined some fantasy bookclubs to give me ideas for the in-between books.

message 10: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (jordanreviewsbooks) Now that the final Wheel of Time book is out, I'll be doing a complete reread and finally finishing the series....almost finished with Eye of the World, only a million pages in the series to go :p

message 11: by Esther (new)

message 15: by Ronald (last edited Feb 04, 2013 12:57AM) (new)

Ronald Finished The Way of Kings, and just started The Gathering Storm, followed by Towers of Midnight & A Memory of Light. I did not want to re-read the entire Wheel of Time series, as I have so many other books on my to-read list. I read the Chronolgy section of the Seven Spokes website instead, so at least I have all previous events more or less in my head.

message 16: by Jason (new)

Jason (jdplusg) Currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamora. I will then be finally delving into the Dark Tower and reading The Gunslinger. If I make it through those two, it will be on to The Blinding Knife.

message 17: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments The Novice (Black Magician Trilogy, #2) by Trudi Canavan and The High Lord (Black Magician Trilogy, #3) by Trudi Canavan

message 18: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Since the beginning of the month, I've read The Warded Man, Brayan's Gold, and The Great Bazaar And Other Stories. I'm on the middle of The Desert Spear and will be done in about two days or so - just in time for the release of book three, and a book signing in Brooklyn by Peter V. Brett. For the rest of the month, I'll be reading the series Wool Omnibus, and the same author's book I, Zombie. I will also be finishing the last four John Carter books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. That should take me to the end of the month. If not, I'll delve back into the Safehold series by David Weber. I finished book 2 about a month a a half ago, but had to stop the series because of a few others that came out or peaked my interest.

Bryan Gregory wrote: "Since the beginning of the month, I've read The Warded Man, Brayan's Gold, and The Great Bazaar And Other Stories. I'm on the middle of The Desert Spear and will be done in about two days or so - ..."

If you're anything like me, Gregory, you'll ignore this piece of advice, but if I were you I'd skip John Carter Of Mars, book 11 in the John Carter series. It was terrible, and bore very little resemblance to the rest of the series.

message 20: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) Reading every single John Carter book shows you have way more stick-to-it-ivness than I ever had/will have.

message 21: by Ginny (new)

Ginny Reading Scarlet. I know that it is technically YA, but it also falls in the SciFi/Fantasy category.

message 22: by Mark (new)

Mark Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire #1) by Mark Lawrence looking forward to this one.

message 23: by Scott (new)

Scott (dodger1379) The Horse and His Boy is the next book I'm going to read

message 24: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 7 comments I just finished The Crippled God. I really enjoyed the Malazan series even though there were plenty of times around book 4 or 5 I almost gave up reading it. I am now about 1/2 way through Eye of the World. I am re-reading the whole series. I have A Memory of Light but I don't want to read it until I re-read the whole series. I don't want to miss anything important.

I'd say the best stopping place might actually be book 8 (Swords of Mars) -- 9 and 10 also weren't all that great.

(Having said that, every time I read the series I read all 11 books even knowing what awaits me at the end.)

message 26: by Heather (new)

Heather | 35 comments So far, I've read A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, both by George R. R. Martin. I'm on A Storm of Swords and I plan to read that and A Feast for Crows this month. Time permitting, I'd like to read A Dance With Dragons as well. So far I've been doing good but they are quite lengthy and I only have so many hours I haven't sold to my boss or sleep.

message 27: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Lord of the Rings -- yep, still my favorite book ever -- and decided Tales from the Perilous Realm seemed like a fine choice for a follow-up.

message 28: by Michele (new)

Michele | 85 comments I just finished reading The Blinding Knife, which I liked better than the first book.

message 29: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 208 comments The Forge of Darkness (The Kharkanas Trilogy #1) by Steven Erikson and then either Witcher books or something else :P

message 36: by Matt (new)

Matt Kay (9littlebees) "The Blade Itself" currently. Not entirely impressed with it so far.

I'm also tempted to restart the Fatseer Trilogy or pick up the Chronicles of Amber where I left off, at "Sign of the Unicorn".

I'm supposed to be reading the Iron King this month for a group, is it good?

message 38: by Mark (new)

Mark The Daylight War (Demon Cycle, #3) by Peter V. Brett good so far.

message 39: by Sofie (new)

Personally, I quite enjoyed it. It's very reminiscent of the movie Labyrinth but with a bit more YA-feeling. Hope you like it!

Helen | 3616 comments Mod
Thanks, I'll let you know.

message 41: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Tales from the Perilous Realm -- the first time I'd read most of those stories in probably thirty years -- and started Mr. Shivers by Robert Jackson Bennett (because after Tolkien I find I need to shift gears for a bit before going back into fantasy).

message 42: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) Matt wrote: "I'm also tempted to restart the Fatseer Trilogy"

Now that sounds like a fun set of books.

message 43: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 106 comments Just finished Cloud Atlas and am whipping through The Warrior's Apprentice and then...I really don't know! It's been awhile since I didn't have a TBR list with some kind of expiration date on half the books.

message 44: by Kenn (new)

Kenn Anderson (kennic64) I am about half way through A Memory of Light, the last book of Robert Jordan's Wheel series.

message 45: by Peter (new)

Peter Started reading the last three books of the Wheel of Time series, have waited until now, being quite patient until the last one was published, here goes, a bit sad really, that all good things have to come to an en

message 46: by Scott (new)

Scott (dodger1379) I need some help - Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionovar series...I read the first two books 15 years ago but couldn't make it through the 3rd. Tried to get through the 3rd book again 7 or 8 years ago and couldn't do it.
Anybody out there actually make it through the 3rd book? Is it worth powering through the mind numbing boring parts?
I'm considering trying again (the first two books in the series were amazing and I can't figure out why I'm having such a hard time with the third....the only other fantasy series that I ever started that I didn't finish was the Wheel of Time)

message 47: by Michael (new)

Michael Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy. Just started Before They Are Hanged. First new author for me this year.

message 48: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) Halfway through the month, reading an almost entirely different set of books now:

Four to Score, Ender's Shadow, Little House in the Big Woods, Deathless, Falstaff's Big Gamble, The Great Unexpected, and, still, The Stand

message 49: by A.J. (new)

A.J. Lauer (ajlauer) So far, read a couple of the A Modern Witch books and now am working on The Hangman's Daughter. Have considered restarting the Wheel of Time series since it just ended - haven't read any of that since high school..

message 50: by Mark (new)

Mark Scott wrote: "I need some help - Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionovar series...I read the first two books 15 years ago but couldn't make it through the 3rd. Tried to get through the 3rd book again 7 or 8 years ago and co..."
